In this well-conceived Elizabethan comedy, writers Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman ask the question: Who was William Shakespeare's muse? The answer: Viola de Lesseps, a young noblewoman who dreams of acting on a man's stage. The screenwriters deliver a cleverly crafted scenario which beautifully illustrates both the early aspirations of the playwright, and a glimpse into the culture of Elizabethan theater. Colorful characters, like the Globe theater owner Henslow (played by Geoffrey Rush), the lead player in the troupe (Ben Affleck), and the Queen herself (Judi Dench), give the cast charm, wit, and feasibility. The young playwright who at the start of the film is experiencing writer's block bursts forth with a lyrical text inspired by the lovely and passionate Viola. Ultimately this film is about the making of a great play, but most importantly it is about the power of words.

A tale of beauty, a joy forever
I just can't imagine what madness gripped my mind to avoid viewing this movie for so long. I was not quite taken by the title, just seemed like it would be something trivial and not in good taste. Then one night when only owls and insomniacs are up late and are sleeplessly willing to be patient and forgiving for even the intolerable on cable there it was-Shakespeare in Love, well why not, thought I, why not... Cup of java, fluffed pillows and in the silence of the early warm summer morning I just surrendered. Several hours later I was just so completely overwhelmed by this film. I have loved the works of Shakespeare since my early years and I become ever so annoyed when anyone who may tamper with any of his works in a cheap and callous way. But, this film is just far and away the ... I just can't imagine what madness gripped my mind to avoid viewing this movie for so long. I am so very sorry to say that I lack the ability to express in simple words how, what and why I love this film: the eloquent language, the period settings, the historical persons rendered by actors in their superb performances, the intricate weaving of one story through another story and finally an ending that merges so very smoothy into yet another story-so sweetly sublime. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Of course, I immediate acquired a copy and now quite often in those wee hours of early morning when I feel like transport my imagination to a realm of a literary past of beauty and grace I again review this film and each time is even better then the last. Whoever may read this my review, you will just have to take it on faith that this is worth seeing. Deserved Best Picture!
This is a wonderful well written well acted film that deserved the many Oscars it received! Not stuffy at all, even though it's Shakespeare!
