Fun little kit!
This is a fun little kit and easy to assemble (bear in mind, I am basically a professional in this area -- I am an electronic engineer with 30 years in the field). It is all through-hole components so basic printed-circuit board techniques will suffice. You will need basic soldering skills and equipment. (A small 20W iron will suffice.) The kit consists of two Christmas-tree-shaped circuit boards and each board has the same circuit -- a simple two-transistor astable multivibrator. The transistors alternately turn each other on and off and switch two strings of four LED's in the process to make for a blinking electronic Christmas tree. It is all powered by a nine-volt battery which forms the trunk of the tree. The battery lasts a good 7-10 days of continuous run. This was so ... This was so appropriate as a Christmas decoration on my desk, as I was working as a circuit-board test engineer. Three notes about this kit -- first, the four 10-uF capacitors supplied make for a tree that blinks too fast for my tastes. I substituted 33-uF capacitors to slow it down. Second, the kit comes with 16 red LED's so you can build it with all red LED's if you wish. It also comes with four green and four yellow LED's so you have the option of making it multi-colored too. Third, to date I have built five of these. Two were for my own display and three more were for people who saw mine and wanted their own! If you display one of these, be prepared to get requests :-)

Fun to make and people just love to get them as gifts around the Holidays. They do take a little basic knowledge about soldering, which is easily learned on the internet. All you need is a decent soldering iron and small gauge solder. One tip: the small springs that make the connection to the 9 volt battery should be put on first, before you do anything else. They are hard to put on once the lights are soldered in place. Fun to make and people just love to get them as gifts around the Holidays.
