The Game Genie Video Game Enhancer System is a popular device that enables players to enter cheat codes or access hidden features on older consoles. This version is for the Sega Genesis console. However, the Genie is much more than a means of gaining infinite lives in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Golden Axe. It’s an advanced piece of programming hardware that can rewrite the information delivered by the cartridge's ROM on the fly. This enables players to access hidden or incomplete content. The Game Genie not only lets players get more out of their video games, but it also provides a unique gaming experience. The Genie also enables players to play Sega Genesis outside of their region. This is because it disables the region locking normally present in the Sega Genesis console. Sega endorsed this product, placing their seal of approval right on the box.The Game Genie uses codes to unlock unique gaming experiences. There is an infinite number of potential codes that can be entered. These codes are stored in the system's ROM and reinterpret software code traveling between the console and the game. When a code is entered at the start screen, it is applied to the software through the Game Genie. By tweaking the numbers being sent through, these Game Genie codes change the game's core functions. The manufacturer, Galoob, was smart enough to determine relevant codes such as infinite lives, extra lives, or fewer lives. They then printed them in booklets and magazines. Other common cheats published by Galoob include infinite time limits, infinite player damage, decreased enemy damage, and increased character speed. This last cheat code can make games such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 particularly exciting. This is accomplished by enabling the game to be run at a faster rate.Modern coders have found many additional changes by using modern computers to examine the code. By examining each game in detail, they can determine how the code interacts with the Game Genie. This has enabled many more cheats and codes to be discovered. Easily found online, these codes enable the Game Genie to completely rewrite games. Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2 can have more and tougher enemies on screen. This is also true of Fatal Fury and Double Dragon. Players can skip directly to specific levels in Revenge of Shinobi, Jurassic Park, or Tiny Toon Adventures. Level select in Earthworm Jim 2, and pick up right where you left off in James Pond. Mortal Kombat can be made to play more similarly to the arcade original. Road Rash and Thunder Force can also be made more challenging. The Genie can offer much more than just infinite lives, although it retains this function as well.These options result in a unique playing experience that can be as easy or as difficult as the player desires. With the right codes, challenging Sega Genesis games can become a walk in the park. Additionally, other codes can add challenges to simpler games. The introduction of infinite lives enables Sega gamers to practice new techniques for speed running. Also, infinite enemy damage can provide challenge desired in other brawlers. The near infinite capability of the Genie makes it a must-have item for Genesis gamers or Sega fans looking to breathe new life into older games.
