About this product

Product Information

Hailed byThe New York Timesas "a master of the British mystery," award-winning author Elizabeth George is one of our most distinguished writers, cherished by readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Her first collection of short stories is an extraordinary offering that deftly explores the dark side of everyday people--and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want most.... In these five tantalizing and original tales, George plumbs the depths of human nature--and human weakness--as only she can. From the chilling tale of a marriage built on an appalling set of lies that only death can reveal, to the final, title story about a penniless schoolteacher whose ambition turns murderous,I, Richardis filled with page-turning drama, danger, and unmatched suspense. Whether the setting is urban or suburban, affluent or middle class, no one is safe from menace. Thanks to Inspector Thomas Lynley, a squabbling group of Anglophiles discovers a killer in its midst...But little help is on hand when a picture-perfect town is shattered by an eccentric new resident's horrifying pet project.... And when a wealthy husband is haunted by suspicions about his much-younger wife, it becomes clear that a man's imagination can be his own worst enemy... Ironic, revealing, and undeniably entertaining, this imaginative collection proves once again why Elizabeth George is one of today's best-loved authors.I, Richardbelongs in the library of each and every mystery devotee. From the Hardcover edition.

  • I, Richard & Other Short Stories

I, Richard is one of five short stories in this book by Elizabeth George and the only one worth reading. George may be a grand master of the psychological police procedural mystery novel but she's no short story writer. I bought this book because I'm reading thru all her Inspector Thomas Lynley mysteries in order of publication and this was up next. The first story is an Inspector Lynley story but it's a very weak, implausible one. Only I, Richard really works as a short story. I was disappointed in this book because I've been devouring her mystery novels as fast as I can read them but I probably wouldn't have even tried them if I'd read this book of short stories first.

  • some fantastic short stories by a great author

  • Entertaining Early Elizabeth George Tales

Five early novellas by Elizabeth George - a mixed bag but all are entertaining: "Exposure" is an early Lynley mystery with subtle hints and a Christie-esque denouement. "The Surprise of His Life" is very predictable, a la a routine Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode. "Good Fences Aren't Always Enough" is a superior AHP-type story, very classy and fun. "Remember, I'll Always Love You" is a real chiller, the best of the lot. "I, Richard" has great historical insights, but the resolution is a bit of a letdown. Well worth a read!
