Nice pre-amp with great sound
I wanted a preamp to connect my iphone to an old 70's tube-type stereo. A fusion of old and new, I guess. I liked that the unit has tubes and it was small yet had separate volume, treble and bass controls. Hookup was a no-brainer; connected the included power supply to the back of the unit along with the mini plug (earphone size) jacks for input from phone and output to the stereo and I was in business. The unit added just enough volume to make listening more enjoyable while the treble and bass controls smoothed out the sound. And who can beat the look of glowing tubes!?I wanted a preamp to connect my iphone to an old 70's tube-type stereo. A fusion of old and new, I guess. Great little preamp well worth it in sound quality & workmanship
I received the preamp today, hooked it up as a preamp from my ipad to my solid state amplifier, the treble & bass adjustment give full control of the sound, I also replaced the 6J1 tubes with a pair of 5654W Tubes JAN GE MATCHED Vacuum Tubes. The sound is very clean but I noticed the low frequency doesn't go low enough for a extremely tight base (booming not tight), the treble is perfect, the mids are great. definitely great sounding amp, I am currently breaking in the new 5654 tubes & hoping to get tighter bass but even if the bass did not get any tighter the sound of this preamp is great. It looks very nice & its small size is a plus. I can't comment about its longevity since I had it less than 24 hrs, I am already thinking of buying another one for my computer sound system. Note: ... I paired this tube preamp with my previously purchased "MUSE8820 Upgrade" (from the same seller, not sure if they still sell it). My source for music is either iBasso DX50 mp3 player, or LG G5 phone. So the setup is LG G5 --- to this preamp -- to MUSE 8220 upgraded Amp. -- HD 598 Closed Back Sennheiser headphones A bit convoluted (and not really portable), but the quality of sound I get is very good. Even person not paying much attention to HD sound, will hear the difference between phone - Sennheiser head phones vs phone - this preamp -- MUSE 8220 the highs are more rolling, the base sound is more extended and gradual. there is also higher perceived separation of instruments and sounds. You will start hearing better more faint sounds, and overall listening experience ... You will start hearing better more faint sounds, and overall listening experience will be less 'boomy' and muffed. It will become finer, and more relaxed at the same time. One specific thing that I really was looking for, is ability to adjust base and treble. That capability does not exist on many amplifiers, but realistically this is a pre-amp function -- so important that this unit has. Ability to adjust treble and base is critical, if your music sources are not 'perfect' (which is the case with most of my listening material). With those adjustments you can compensate for some less-than-perfect recordings. Adjustments found on equalizers (in the MP3 player or phones, do not do the trick for me... I find them either more intrusive , or not noticeable enough...) I cannot hear any negative/unpleasant interference from the pre-amp. it is pretty good. In terms of 'what could be done better': a) The pre-amp did not come with cable allowing to connect it to an amp. I guess the seller assumed that the buyers already have that. And I had one, but the one I have now is of low quality -- so I hear some interference when there is no music, or the passage is very very quiet. Just reduces quality of initial experience a bit. I will get it upgraded. b) it takes a bit of time to come to US.. I think over 1 month .. may be 1.5 months since I ordered. c) given that preamp always needs to work with the amp, it would be nice that the power outlet could manage (without interference) 2 cords (may be with some adapters) so that I can charge or run the portable amp, and this pre-amp from the same single outlet connection... But this is a stretch to ask, I guess. I cannot speak for longevity of the unit or the tubes, as I only used it for a few days. But I made sure I ran it continuously for about 15 hours, before setting for critical listening

Great little pre-amp
I am using this small pre-amp to drive a dyna sca35 spare inputs, as the dyna except for the phono pre-amp section is basically a st-35 power amp. This little unit works great, it vastly improves the high frequency response, as I am using fairly long cables from the music source. Highly recommended

Real improvement
This is the second tube preamp I have purchased. The first had Bluetooth and tone controls included. I went for this model because it was very basic. I use the preamp as a front-end to a small Class D amplifier on my desk. The first day I used it, I asked my boss if he had a new microphone because I noticed how much better he sounded and I forgot about having added the tube preamp. The introduction of this preamp changed the character of the sound for the better. I first tried using it with a $20.00 TDA 3116 based amp. While the sound was very good, I got even better sound using a TDA 7498 based amplifier. I would go so far as to say that this inexpensive combination could qualify for audiophile quality.
