About this product

Product Information

"Memories of My Melancholy Whores" is Gabriel Garcia Marquez's first work of fiction in ten years, written at the height of his powers, the Spanish edition of which Ilan Stavans called, "Masterful. Erotic. As hypnotizing as it is disturbing" ("Los Angeles Times)." On the eve of his ninetieth birthday, our unnamed protagonist-an undistinguished journalist and lifelong bachelor-decides to give himself "the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin." The virgin, whom an old madam procures for him, is splendidly young, with the silent power of a sleeping beauty. The night of love blossoms into a transforming year. It is a year in which he relives, in a rush of memories, his lifetime of (paid-for) sexual adventures and experiences a revelation that brings him to the edge of dying-not of old age, but, at long last, of uncorrupted love. "Memories of My Melancholy Whores" is a brilliant gem by the master storyteller.

I have read a number of times all the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This book is one of his best. If new to this author start with One Hundred Years of Solitude

  • A Great Love Story

Nobel Prize winner wrote this book in 2005, one of the last masterpieces of his life. Please DO NOT be put off by the title, Marquez does like shock value in his work, which are mixtures of fable and fantastic themes. THIS IS A GREAT LOVE STORY. It is the story of a dying man finding love to his surprise at the age of ninety. When he meets his love, he exclaims, "But how can a man who has once strayed into heaven ever hope to make terms with the earth?" Finding The One is a singular serendipity, and as Marquez points out when he finds The One, " I became aware that the invincible power that has moved the world is unrequited, not blissful and comfortable, love." (My translation of that line). I have found from experience that love is invincible and not always confined to just one lifetime, ...

  • Melancholy Whores

A beautifully vivid text to fall into and utterly loose yourself in. 'Memories Of My Melancholy Whores' is authored by the admirable Gabriel Marquez -best known for the book 'One-Hundred Years of Solitude'- whose narration is overcome with a realness that is difficult to find in literature today. Highly recommended.

  • Memories of My Melancholy Whores

"It is a triumph of life that old people lose their memories of inessential things," Garcia Marquez writes in his first novel in ten years, "Though memory does not often fail with regard to things that are of real interest to us."
