G700SE is designed for work but can be a good rugged outdoor camera too.
While the earlier Ricoh G500 camera could be designated an industrial or construction-job-site camera, this newer G700SE is more of a logistical image capture device. The logistical options for this camera include user created menus of alphanumeric text and integrated barcode functions. The menus allow the camera user to designate 'memos' that can be saved as separate files along with images and optionally imprinted on the images. The G700SE can use it's built-in bluetooth radio to receive and copy data from an external GPS into memo fields. It also has a built-in WiFi radio. Images and memo data can be exported via Bluetooth or via WiFi to a FTP server. There are optional GPS and Type-1 Laser barcode readers that dock on the side of the G700SE. I bought the camera as an upgrade ... I bought the camera as an upgrade from my Fujifilm HD3W, an earlier job-site heavy-duty camera. My usage is an all-weather durable camera to take on my adventures. Olympus and Panasonic make significantly smaller rugged cameras, but here is why this type of camera could be better: - over-sized rubberized buttons and dial mean you don't have to take off your gloves to use the camera controls - anti-slip finish and grip you can wrap your fingers around, plus a standard neck strap The disadvantage of course is the size and weight, but sometimes that is an advantage because the G700SE resembles older film P&S cameras and strangers (non-camera people) have an easier time holding the camera and finding the large orange shutter release button. The compact internal zoom optics come at a price, that being a small sensor that delivers noisy high-ISO images. ISO 64 delivers the best IQ is probably the native sensitivity. Both ISO 64 and ISO 100 look as nice as Canon's or Sony's best 1/2.5" sensor cameras but the G700SE isn't in the same league as the Canon G12 or Nikon P7100. Night time exposures at ISO 64 and ISO 100 are very good. At ISO 400 noise is apparent especially in blue sky and shadows. At ISO 3200 that far away shot of Uncle Bob will be indistinguishable from Big Foot. The flash is somewhat of a mystery to me because it appears to only operate correctly over a narrow exposure (or narrow range of power/duration.) I've tried unsuccessfully to do fill-in flash with strongly back-light scenes, or use flash at macro focusing distances, and the images are always overexposed. That's too bad because the G700SE has an outstanding close-focus macro and fill-in flash is so useful in high-reflection conditions (ocean, snow). There is an accessory shoe on top of the camera but it doesn't have any electrical contacts (it is not a hot shoe) so your external flash probably won't work unless it has a built-in slave sensor. Last but not least the G700SE only has a "P" programmed exposure mode. You can do exposure compensation and the camera can automatically bracket -0.5, 0, +0.5EV. While it has Ricoh's SNAP setting for pre-focused shooting, you cannot force a particular shutter speed or lens aperture. If you want to shoot a panorama you have to put the camera in continuous mode and hold down the shutter release button while watching the LCD to know when you can pan the camera for the next shot. Otherwise in non-continuous mode the camera can re-adjust the exposure between each shot and the resulting panorama could have banding problems. I'm happy using the G700SE as an adventure camera because its over-sized controls make it easier to use than the Olympus and Panasonic "Tough" cameras.
