  • Accompaniment recording to Ken Burns' Civil War epic

This recording a bunch of assorted musicians who did some of the music for Ken Burns epic "The Civil War". It is not the soundtrack. There is one of that too, but I don't own it. Ken Burns gathered some of his favorite musicians to perform a bunch of the songs he used in his epic. I already had a copy of this in my library, but wanted a second. The musicians on this recording include Jay Unger & Molly Mason & Fiddle Fever, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Waylon Jennings, John Hartford, Kathy Mattea, Kate & Anna McGarricle, Judy Collins, Hoyt Axton, Ronnie Gilbert, Richie Havens & the United States Military Academy Band. If the reader is looking for one recording to represent that period of American History - this is that one recording. I come back to it ...

  • That is what it is!

I was blown away by the intense long TV program with the brilliant music a few years ago. One of the best cuts on Nanci Griffiths 'Trip Back to the Bountiful' is 'Hard times will come again no more' I discovered Kate and Anna mc Garrigle singing it with Emmylou Harris and Rufus in the transatlantic sessions. When I hunted for a copy I found this. If you can understand what I am saying so far, you will love the disc.

  • well, it's better then...

the ken burns documentry cd...but gets a little annoying at times with all it's assorted artists...it was also a major label release, which menas they wanted to market thing as a compiliation of "amazing" musicians doing civil war songs...now granted there are a few instrumentals which really carry the thing...

  • Excellent piece pf musical history!

Clearly this collection is one of the best available. The artists capture the "spirit" of the times in which these songs were first sung. The only exception to this is the first,Ashokan Farewell which is not an 'original' but was written in 1982. It is nevertheless is so well done and fitted to the style that it took me several times of reading the accompanying literature to realize that it is a 'modern' addition.
