About this product

Product Information

In the midseventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away." Emmy and Grammy Award winner, author of the acclaimed "New York Times" bestsellers "Shopgirl" and "The Pleasure of My Compan"y, and a regular contributor to "The New Yorker," Martin has always been awriter. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written. At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes. Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times -- the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of "Saturday Night Live" in the seventies. Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. "Born Standing Up" is asuperb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.

Mr.Martin worked his ass off to get where he is today.

I liked the book. He was very dedicated to his craft and after reading the book i have even a softer, kinder image of him than before .I wanted more details about his career which is just being nosy nosy nosy. Maybe he will write another in a few decades!

  • Martin's life as a Stand Up comedian

I really liked Steve Martin when he was a straight up stage comedian. I got many hours of enjoyment over his comedy records and would go out of my way to look for his next television appearances. This book, in Martin's words, gives the reader insight into his early career, including the downside of "bombing" on stage as well as the kinda money he made during those days at nightclubs early in his career. Its written very well and also has some of the familiar Martin charm in the writing. If your expecting a "Tell All" or a Finger-pointing book or even a laugh out loud autobiography, you wont get that here. What you'll get is a nice read into the early life of one of the best stand up comedians of all time.

  • Like a Sugar Cookie

I watched Steve Martin's career as a fascinated fan, so I was very eager to get Born Standing Up. The book is an easy, interesting read, but I found myself a bit less than satisfied. Martin walks the reader thru major influences in his life, but the level of sharing is less than intimate. I would have enjoyed more detail and more anecdotal information. There's enough here for the reader to enjoy the experience but not enough to be completely satisfying. It's like a sugar cookie: happy enough to have had it, wouldn't have much mattered if I had not. Borrow one if you can--the book, not the cookie.

  • Good book. fast read..would like more Steve Now

I really enjoyed this book. I remember being at the Coliseum in Richland OH (he wrote about that show) and just loving his stand up and humor. It was interesting hearing about his early years but wished he would have gotten into more of his life now also. A little more insight into what he is up to now. I know he doesn't owe me but I would have liked a few more chapters about his life now and adventures.... I loved the book though. I read all his books.
