About this product

Product Information

The page-turning first novel in the charmingly gothic, fiendishly funny Faustian series about a brilliant scientist who makes a deal with the Devil, twice. * "The spot-on work of a talented writer." -- The Denver Post Johannes Cabal sold his soul years ago in order to learn the laws of necromancy. Now he wants it back. Amused and slightly bored, Satan proposes a little wager: Johannes has to persuade one hundred people to sign over their souls or he will be damned forever. This time for real. Accepting the bargain, Jonathan is given one calendar year and a traveling carnival to complete his task. With little time to waste, Johannes raises a motley crew from the dead and enlists his brother, Horst, a charismatic vampire to help him run his nefarious road show, resulting in mayhem at every turn.

Reviews
Praise for Jonathan L. Howard'sJohannes Cabal the Necromancer "Jonathan Howard has written a delightfully wicked and inventive story on the game of beat the devil. He turns conventions of the Faustian tales into a modern carnivalesque that is witty, macabre, and unexpectedly touching. If you like the dead to have a little life in them yet,Johannes Cabal the Necromanceris the kind of book you'll die for." -Keith Donohue,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Stolen Child "That ole black magic has never been more fun than it is in this deft and quirky Faustian tale, and the voice is fittingly sardonic as in 'sour juices dripping from crushed hopes.' Johannes Cabal may be soulless, but he's also cocky, darkly hilarious, and cheerfully irreverent. A diabolical romp." -Elle Newmark, author ofThe Book of Unholy Mischief www.doubleday.com [book or author website?],  "Witty, inventive, and thoroughly entertaining, this rollicking Faustian adventure grabs the reader and holds him until the very last page." --Tucson Citizen   "The spot-on work of a talented writer." --Denver Post    "Howard makes it look easy to paint a soul-stealing murdering necromancer as a sympathetic character; that, folks, is worth the price of admission. • Great Book At A Great Price!

Johannes Cabal the Necromancer is what I would consider a dark comedy. Satan himself is amused by Mr. Cabal"s proposal. I would recommend this for fans of Chuck Palahniuk or of any light horror or of the odd in general. It is well written with witty dialogue and simple prose. It doesn't try to show off, which is nice. And if you like this one, it doesn't stop here! There are multiple books that follow after Mr. Cabal travels with his carnival of Death.

  • Learned a lot.

I consider myself an educated person and am well versed in the English language, but I have never read a book where I had to look up the meaning of so very many different words. It got to the point where I was having to reread passages just so they would make sense. Overall, I liked the story though. The subtle humor and the constant bickering between the brothers was enjoyable.

  • Couldn't ask for more!

Perfect! wonderful book! Introduced to me by a friend, I couldn't get enough...until I read the second book. I could not put it down. By far the best read in YEARS!

  • good book... read the rest

totally dig this book... want to read the rest of the johannes cabal books :) the title sounds very creepy but if you liked ray bradbury's "something wicked this way comes" then this book is great
