About this product

Product Information

The #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, named one of the best books of the year by The Boston Globe and National Geographic: acclaimed journalist Douglas Preston takes readers on a true adventure deep into the Honduran rainforest in this riveting narrative about the discovery of a lost civilization -- culminating in a stunning medical mystery. Since the days of conquistador Hern n Cort s, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization. Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease. Suspenseful and shocking, filled with colorful history, hair-raising adventure, and dramatic twists of fortune, THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century.

Reviews
"What reader could resist a new book by Douglas Preston called THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD? Not this reader. Preston's book offers rewards for both the mystery fan and the nonfiction aficionado. THE LOST CITY is addictive-fast-paced and riveting, but it's also important. We mustn't repeat the cataclysmic mistakes of the past. Ironically-as THE LOST CITY illustrates-that's exactly what our short-sighted civilization is doing right now."-- James Patterson

Awesome Adventure Book. Great customer experience with myrtl49.

This is an captivating true account of one of the most significant archeological discoveries of the modern age. But, it truly reads like an adventure novel. The author, Douglas Preston is an excellent writer and keeps the reader engaged throughout. The customer experience with the shop that I purchased this book from, myrtl49 was absolutely flawless. I've put myrtl49 on my very short preferred list.

First half of the boodk was very good. Second half, not so much.

I bought this book, expecting it to be solely about the legend of the city and the exploration. Most of the bookwas exactly that. The first few chapters pertained to the legend and previous attempts to locate the city. The next several chapters were about the present day expedition and the technology used to help the team locate the site. All these chapters were great. But then after the expedition there were several more chapters to read. Chapters then moved to the physical health of the team members after their return. Also interesting, but then this topic a lengthy explanation of how disease was introduce the the civilizations of Central America by explorers from other countries. This was a little off topic as far as I was concerned. Then their were the the verbal attacks of ...

  • A real classic page turner

This is a gem of a book no matter what your background or interests are. As with many true, historical accounts, one learns a great deal about not only the subject but all the peripheral elements as well. For instance, did you know that the banana trade was instantly successful and also was directly responsible for a revolution? A well written account of the lost city in Honduras.

  • "Heavy with future implications"

Book was difficult to put down. The location in the Honduran jungle provided a lot of interest as well as suspense. The leishmaniasis problem and its implications for modern society are frightening. Loved the book despite the fears presented for our future! Highly recommend the book.
