  • By Nancy Young

I had read 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell, and really enjoyed both of them. They left me with a desire to read more from the author. I chose Down & Out in Paris and London for my next read. It was excellent. George writes with ease, and you get the feeling you are there experiencing events with the characters. I also learned alot about Paris and London in that particular time period. I highly recommend this book.

  • Mandatory chef reading

This is the classic reportage of old-school French kitchens. If you work in a modern kitchen, or are a fan of cuisine at the higher levels....you must read this book. I noticed that reviewers of other editions thought the material was preachy or dated. Not so. The trial by fire of long hours and miserable conditions is still the industry norm.....though not the sanitation. Ask any stagier from El Bulli or Mugaritz: they completely identify with Orwell. A great reporter at his best. Buy it!

  • Orwell !

One of orwells earlier works based upon his experience living in poverty between London and Paris.
