About this product

Product Information

Throughout the Western world, great kingdoms have fallen and despots lay crushed beneath the heels of Romes advancing legions. But in this age of magnificent triumph and barbaric cruelty, internal rebellion threatens the stability and survival of the mighty Republic. And an aging, ailing Gaius Marius, heralded conqueror of Germany and Numidia, longs for that which was prophesied many years before: an unprecedented seventh consulship of Rome. It is a prize to be won only through treachery and with blood, pitting Marius against a new generation of assassins, powerseekers and Senate intriguers -- and setting him at odds with the ambitious, tormented Lucius Cornelius Sulla, once Mariuss most trusted right-hand man, now his most dangerous rival.

  • CAESAR AND HIS RISING STAR

This is the second of a series on Julius Caesar and his times, and I am regularly afraid that Colleen McCullough will someday finish her work on this topic. My first encounter with the author was "The Thorn Birds". And that was a long time ago. I loved it so much that I wanted to read another of her novels. But the ones I found at that time were uninteresting to me, let alone capable of generating my enthusiasm. Then more than 10 years later I found - I was regularly searching for her in book stores - "The First Man in Rome". I thought I knew just about everything I needed to know about Caesar, having studied him off and on from eighth grade Latin through Graduate School. I had then spent 23 years teaching History and Culture at the university level. Now, I don't want to mislead you. ...

  • Most excellent!

Excellent mind-crack for those who love reading about historical Rome. Though it's clear that McCullough adores Gaius Julius Caesar and every little thing he does (and oh so brilliantly!), her most fascinating character is actually Sulla. He's clearly nuts, but highly, highly effective (and yet denies he's human, though his grief for his son is always with him, and does a great deal to convince other people that he is actually human). Really well done.

  • Great read

Love the series. Great to get it in paperback; not available in stores.
