About this product

Product Information

Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament. At the center of this heroic life was a passionate twenty-year fight to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies, a victory achieved just three days before his death in 1833. Metaxas discovers in this unsung hero a man of whom it can truly be said: he changed the world. Before Wilberforce, few thought slavery was wrong. After Wilberforce, most societies in the world came to see it as a great moral wrong. To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade, HarperSanFrancisco and Bristol Bay Productions have joined together to commemorate the life of William Wilberforce with the feature-length film Amazing Grace and this companion biography, which provides a fuller account of the amazing life of this great man than can be captured on film. This account of Wilberforce's life will help many become acquainted with an exceptional man who was a hero to Abraham Lincoln and an inspiration to the anti-slavery movement in America.

  • Excellent historical facts

This was one of the most informative books I've ever read dealing with the slave trade. The author writes it like a novel but it is all historical. It takes a genius to write like this. I wish I read the book before I saw the movie, it would have given me more background on the what in important figure Mr. Wilberforce was in the British Parliament and the struggles he went thru to just bring the slave trade atrocities to the forefront of the commoners. The author said 517 petitions for abolition arrived in Parliament from thousands of British subjects, yet for years those in power refused abolition. Reading this book game me a greater understanding of what America when thru and deeper meaning of what President Lincoln was up against. It was an excellent read, and highly recommended, not ...

  • Amazing Story!

I loved reading the real story of William Wilberforce and Eric Metaxas presents his biography brilliantly. From serious to tongue-in-cheek humor, Metaxas gives the reader a well rounded picture of this incredible, humble man who changed the course of human history, beginning with reform in his homeland, England. I loved this book so much that I read it straight through TWICE within days. I found a sadness when finished reading this book, as though I were placing a man of God on the shelf to collect dust. May it never be! Wilberforce has been largely forgotten by both British and American histories. Historian Eric Metaxas, along with other historian biographers (and director Michael Apted of "Amazing Grace", the film) have put flesh to bones of the past and brought to life this amazing ...

  • Amazing Grace by Eric Metaxas (2007)

My reading group chose this book as our first read. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a scholarly contemporary author. This book is written with a brilliant combination of intelligence and wit. I would not consider this a "fast read", but well worth the time. To get the full effect, keep a dictionary handy! Very informative and inspiring!

  • Great story of history that tells how slavery ended in the British Empire. A must read!

    Highly recommend the book.
