Frank plays COL Ryan, an Air Force P38 pilot shot down in Italy. He takes over command of a POW camp made up primarily of English enlisted soldiers and a few Americans. The plot takes a while to get going but when the allied prisoners take over a German prisoner of war train taking them to Germany, the action begins. Not sure if this story ever really happened but is sure makes for a fine WWII movie. However, I disliked the use of Italian trainer airplanes that were suppose to be Messerschmitt ME-109's. Made in 1965 in color, 1 hr 52 min. Von Ryan's Express stars Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard. The story is of an escape from a prisoner of war camp. Sinatra crashes his plane in Italy and is taken to a camp that has mostly British prisoners. He is high officer and changes things right from the start. Since the allies are close to moving in the guards abandon the camp. All prisoners escape together, but are recaptured and loaded on a train heading back to Germany. Sinatra comes up with a plan to take over the train and reroute it. The whole movie is primarily centered on the train journey and their efforts to remain undetected and avoid recapture.
