Seller Notes: “Good-Very Good overall antique cond: For sale is this recently discovered, 2nd of a pr of early-mid ... “Good-Very Good overall antique cond: For sale is this recently discovered, 2nd of a pr of early-mid 19th c American antique, very early, figured maple, lathe-turned, reeded wooden thread spool &/or hand weaving tool, w/tapered ends. This early American maple thread spool is lathe-turned but finished by hand. The graining in the maple is slightly figured & perhaps tiger maple, meaning this early thread spool dates back to the early-mid 19th c & well before the US Civil War, when figured New England maple hardwood was often used for its decorative appeal, strength & density as an American hardwood, often found in the Northeast of the US, meaning it was local & could be easily procured & purchased for woodworking use. The uneven striped banding seen in the wood, is indicative of diseased maple hardwood, often sought out & used by cabinetmakers & American woodworkers for its figured striations & zebra-like dark veins or banding. An excellent early-mid 19th c American cultural artifact.”
