  • Great Concept in a Pocket Field Guide

Amazingly compact for a 450-page book, this is a wonderful general guide to the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest. This is not a Fodor's or DK guide with hotel or restaurant listings but rather an introduction to the plants, animals, geology and natural wonders of the region. I wish I had picked up a copy prior to my last trip to the Northwest to help answer my questions about birds and plants I saw. I finally found a copy in a local bookstore and I plan to have this wonderful guide book in my back pocket during my next trip to Whidbey Island, WA. It features over a thousand color photos and a durable plasticized cover that will ensure years of field use. It's logically arranged and, while the information is somewhat scant on any one topic due to the sheer number of topics covered, ...

  • Outstanding Book on Pacific NW Eco System! Plants-Insects-Animals-Fish etc

This is a MUST HAVE book when you visit or live in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington State.) After a lot of research, I bought this Field Guide for my neighbor since he's restoring 4 acres of wetlands. It is very informative, well organized and written and gives you enough information and pictures to satisfy a novice and experienced lay "naturalist" or anyone interested in anything and everything native to the Great Northwest. In fact, after giving the book to my neighbor and reading more of it, I bought one for my family and I. Yes, this National Audubon Society Regional Guide to the Pacific Northwest is that good!! (Don't mind the 1998 edition.) Enjoy it!

  • Best all-purpose regional nature guide

I take it with me almost any time I go hiking or to a natural area. Doesn’t go into a lot of detail on any one species, but has just enough information to start identifying everything from rocks to plants to mammals. I’ve got a smart phone; if I need more detailed info once I’ve got a general idea from the book, I’ll just look it up online. Every other field guide I’ve found is too specific and therefore limited in scope. I’m not just a bird watcher or flower lover; I love it all and don’t want to carry a bunch of books around. There’s one of these for each major natural region in the United States; I would love to buy them all and use them on an epic road trip!
