A paranormal investigator invites a trio of people to help him examine Hill House, a sinister family estate haunted by the angry souls from its troubled past. While Eleanor (Julie Harris) looks for an escape from the memory of her recently-deceased mother, she becomes increasingly obsessed with the history of the huge, ominous house.     A VERY haunted house!

    I have always loved haunted house movies-and this one, by master director Robert Wise, is my favorite, hands down. Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson), with permission from its owner, selects 3 people to stay a few nights with him at Hill House to prove the existence of ghost, or at least, an afterlife. Eleanor Lance and "Theodora" are the only people on his list who show up (along with the nephew of the owner, Luke Sanderson). Theodora (Claire Bloom) is gifted with extra-sensory perception, or ESP; but Eleanor (Julie Harris) has something deeper-and wants to escape the memory of her dead mother, whom she had to care for since her teen years. All goes well at first, but the eerie caretakers warn them that the goings-on at the house after dark are quite unsettling-and, boy, is that an ...
