sharp, soild pro lens
This is a fabulous lens that focus fast enough on my Df, dispite some reviews. Very sharp with good contrast and great color, even wide open. It also has great bokeh for portrait work. I paid 1/8 the cost of a new one they now sell after fixing a small dent in the front filter ring. This is a professional lens with glass that far succeeds the consumer zooms out there in all aspects. It is very solid all metal and I like the f stop ring that my Df can use. The drop in filter also has a rubber seal that my older 600mm does not have. It is small also and not too heavy. No VR or motor inside to break. A very capable optic at a very nice price...
This is not one of the MONSTER lens with the advantage that is not married to a MONSTER price. About six months ago I was looking for a Tele that let me take some wildlife pictures, when I decide to make some research... and VOILA!!! one of the first lenses that shows up as sharp and with a very nice color reproduction was Nikkor AF 300mm F4D lens. This is a lens that is sold in two or three different AF configurations while keeping the same optic desing. Of curse... if it is not broken do not repair it!!! And Nikon has made a good work at keeping in their optical line up lenses that, like this one, can be used for the advanced amateur or the professional without the penalty in size and weight that the BIG GUNS impose on them... Lets make clear that this lens is not a sustitute for for the ... This is not one of the MONSTER lens with the advantage that is not married to a MONSTER price. Long Telephoto on a budget.
On a budget and shooting outdoors this version will work fine. This version does not have a built in motor and relies on the drive inside the camera body.
