About this product

Product Information

Developers at Acquire, whose past credits include the Tenchu series of games, are the people responsible for the action-adventure title Way of the Samurai. As a masterless samurai, you happen upon a small village embroiled in a violent conflict between two clans. The part your character plays is entirely up to you; the branching storyline makes provisions for the samurai to choose to join either side in the conflict, or simply to aid the villagers, if and when needed. During conversations with the local populace, you're presented with a number of different replies and your choices will alter the demeanor and attitude of the other characters. Action-and-consequence plays a vital role in the game and hastily made decisions can greatly affect the duration of your stay in Rokkotsu Pass. Adding to the character's enigmatic nature (your actions largely define his personality) is the player's ability to customize the overall look of the samurai before beginning the adventure.

During combat, your character is capable of performing a wide array of attacks and blocks, the resulting effectiveness of which is determined by the timing and attack stance. Pressing a directional button along with the block button can cause an opponent to overbalance or stumble, creating an opening in which to strike. A combination of quick and strong attacks, jumps, and blocks lead to the discovery and mastery of more powerful moves. However, the weapon you currently wield affects the moves you're capable of performing in combat. Each weapon is rated in various categories, from durability to attack power. The former is represented by small blocks in the lower corner of the screen. Repeatedly clashing blades with an enemy will eventually cause the weapon to break. A blacksmith in town will repair or upgrade weapons for a price, though he too is affected by your actions and a loose tongue can leave you with no one to fix your damaged blades.

The save system breaks from tradition in that your saved game is actually deleted from the memory card once you load it, preventing players from reloading past games should they be foolish enough to get killed. Upon completion, additional robes and faces can be unlocked with which to customize your samurai. A battle mode, which allows two players to fight against one another, can also be unlocked.

    Classic

This is a classic for the PlayStation 2 that allows you to play a a wandering samurai. You are in a pas for only two day but everything you do alters the ending of the game. It’s fun to play through and be a bad ass or be the hero.

  • Way of the Samurai Review

Taking a different approach from the Tenchu series, Acquire has delivered a game that combines the combat of Tenchu (or Bushido Blade) with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, making for quite an interesting experience. Many will note that a complex battle system and multi-dimensional storyline are the main ingredients to this rather short, graphically impaired samurai delicacy. However, the developers have also added a splash of interesting weaponry and a side-order portion of replay value, leading to a hearty meal of a game that will definitely get gamers going back to the table for seconds. Graphics in Way of the Samurai are pretty weak, probably the biggest disappointment in the game. The character models in cutscenes are done very nicely, and the intro movie is very ...

  • A short story of a samurai

While Way of the Samurai is by far one of the shortest games i have ever played, The fact that there are so many endings makes it worth while. You will find yourself running trough the Deja Vu like gameplay trying to alter outcomes for better or worse. With so many different swords and fighting moves, there are many ways to approach each battle no mater how difficult your opponent is. One that note, taking on multiple opponents is not vary difficult at all. The game has that classic "one at a time" fighting style. So really its always one on one with others watching untill its there turn to be ended by your blade. Along with being a short game, its also a small game. The world is not as big as many players wold like. On average, you can get your first ending in only a few hours ...

  • Great Game!

A great deal of variety in how you play the game, not just in the several different endings, but the hundreds of techniques to unlock and unleash on your foes as the main character can also find over 80 different weapons, each complete with their own moveset! Great graphics for the era, easy controls, adjustable difficulty for the AI, and excellent replay value makes this a truly great game to go with how rare it is.

  • Worth the buy

Great game, excellent gameplay, short story but the multiple endings makes it interesting.
