  • Quite a good DVD but don't expect a perfect restoration.

    I bought this DVD because I had seen the film in 1954 at the cinema and had bought the soundtrack on vinyl LP at the time. As the story was filmed in Australia this added a little more to the nostalgia effect. The DVD was listed as restored (2005) but the average quality is probably due to the degraded quality of the original source, but it's still OK. The sound has been converted to Dolby Digital 5.1 and the music is very good but not so the voices (especially those pirate accents). I enjoyed seeing it again very much. Elements of the plot (kidnapped governor's daughter, lost jewel etc ) are revived again recently in Pirates of the Caribbean! Robert Newton is superb as he plays Long John Silver again after Disney's Treasure Island (this film was meant as a sequel). I like this ...
