Based on the true story from the memoirs (Pentimento) of early 20th century playwright, Lillian Hellman (Jane Fonda), motion picture, "Julia," portrays Hellman's life in the 1930's when she became famous after the production of her 1st major play on Broadway, "The Children's Hour." (Shirley MacLaine & Audrey Hepburn star in the award winning motion picture). "Julia," is focused on Hellman's lifelong friendship with Julia (Vanessa Redgrave). Their relationship was more than a friendship between the 2 women. Julia is a student at the University in Vienna whose professors are Albert Einstein & Sigmund Freud! Hellman is already a playwright being guided through revisions, at a New England beach house retreat, by her mentor (& perhaps casual lover) Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards). After her ... After her Broadway sensation, the renowned playwright (Hellman-Fonda) attends a Russian writers' conference. In Europe, the political climate has drastically changed while Julia's (Redgrave's) on campus. Anti-fascism is Julia's socio-political activist bent. Julia realizes that Hellman's en route to Russia & devises an exceedingly dangerous plan that she wants her dear girlfriend to carry out. Julia wants Hellman to smuggle $$$ through Nazi Germany to fund the anti-fascist movement against Hitler. What could be more life-threatening than for a Jewish playwright going to communist Russia collaborating with Julia's money smuggling plan in Nazi Berlin? I can't reveal much more of the true story except to say that during Julia's & Hellman's meeting in Europe, Julia tells Hellman she has a daughter named Lilly, after Hellman. Any more & I'll spoil the show for you. When "Julia" was released in January 1978, it was undoubtedly the best motion picture I'd ever seen. I still believe that Jane Fonda & Vanessa Redgrave deliver the best performances by 2 actresses ever filmed: the scene of Hellman (Fonda) & Julia (Redgrave) meeting briefly in a Berlin restaurant is the epitome of best script & acting. The supporting cast is outstanding: Johann (Maximilian Shell); Anne Marie (Meryl Streep); Dorothy Parker (Rosemary Murphy) & Alan Campbell (Hal Holbrook). At the 1978 Academy Awards 3 Oscars went to Vanessa Redgrave (Best Supporting Actress); Jason Robards (Best Supporting Actor); Alvin Sargent (Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium). At the 1978 Golden Globes, USA, Jane Fonda was awarded for "Best Motion Picture Actress-Drama" & Vanessa Redgrave was awarded for "Best Motion Picture Actress in a Supporting Role." In all, "Julia" won 3 Oscars, another 17 wins & 21 nominations! Fred Zinnemann directed. Runtime is 118mins. For screenplay excellence, tight scripted as it is, a true story plot being such an intrigue, plus, Redgrave & Fonda giving their doubtless best dramatic performances. Both actresses are still delivering award winning performances 30 years post-hence. Hellman went on to write many famous plays, including "Little Foxes," with Bette Davis playing the lead in the motion picture.

Don't miss viewing this fantastic, sad, beautiful wonderfully crafted film
One of the best films I've ever seen. Both Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave are gems. I believe this is a true story; a story of what "TRUE" friendship is. It doesn't happen often in a person's life.
