The real-time combat is modeled after shooting games, albeit with the option to pause time for more precise shots using V.A.T.S. (the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System). V.A.T.S. lets you pinpoint vulnerability areas with the help of percentage markers displayed on each body part. The higher the percentage, the likelier you are to hit the highlighted area. <br><br>Aiming at a particular body part can cripple it, affecting the enemy's ability to use an arm or leg in combat, while critical hits result in graphic displays of dismemberment. Defeating enemies earns you experience points to enhance your character's stats and acquire abilities called "perks," or specific talents in a chosen area of expertise. Fallout 3 also features some camaraderie in the form of a loyal canine named Dogmeat and a non-player character of your choosing. A licensed soundtrack with songs from the '40s and '50s helps set the mood, offering such hits as "Way Back Home," "Anything Goes," "Butcher Pete," and "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire."

fallout 3, after the atomic war the world is destroyed, people are just trying to start a new world.

Great game, but nothing new
This is a great game, don't get me wrong, but it is far too similar to Oblivion in scope and is reminicent of Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl and has music quite like that in Bioshock. Although I don't have the ultimate gamer system (P4 2.6, 1GB RAM 80GB HDD, Asus P4G 800V MB, Sapphire Radeeon X1650 Pro) I was not at all impressed with the graphics. On my same system, I'd have to say the graphics were no better than Oblivion (which came out in '06!) The way the gaming media hyped this game and its superior graphics and revolutionary "free" environment, I expected a lot more realism. In my opinion, the graphics in Half Life 2 were so much better. There is a lot to see in Fallout 3. Many undiscovered locations, caches, etc. The weapons are many but only a few are actually needed. There are many ... There are many side quests, which give you a huge amount of gameplay time (especially if you like to explore...like me). The AI characters are not as diverse as I expected. Many of the faces and actions are quite repetitive. There are a few minor glitches I noticed...No smoke coming out of the mouths of those smoking cigarettes, killed enemies wiggling non-stop after death and bodies, both dead and alive, falling and reaching through walls. One thing that I would have like to have seen was a change in the weather. I am only on level 13, but I have yet to feel the acid rain and the cold of the dreary, dark days there (and, also, to have it affect my health!) Are you listening Bethesda? THQ? Valve??? Rather that just kill some enemies throughout a game, I would like to actually LIVE in that different world!!!! A huge LCD screen, fast CPU/GPU and 6GB's of ram still wouldn't fully transport me to that fantastic world. I'm sorry Bethesda, But for the $48.00 I shelled out for your latest release, I'd have to say THQ's Bioshock ('07) beat you hands down on storyline, AI's, and environment (and I only paid 18.00 on that one). I can only say it is a good game. In future reviews, Excellent will be reserved for those games I find actually innovative in terms of storyline, environment and character development. UPDATE: I've finished the game and I would have to give it a "Very Good" rating now. after level 13 (where I left off in this review) some interesting things happened...most notably, the arrival to vault 106 (?) when the computer simulation occurs. Very intriguing! Also, how very difficult it is throughout the game to remain virtuious (even without having killed good civilians!). Going to play again now...going to make different choices. For the good of humanity!! (All in all, a 9 out of 10).

GAME CRASHES on Quad Core Computers
OK, I had to edit this review. From the **s down was my original review with that had 5 stars. But after playing this game for many hours and finding a Bug in the game that crashes it completely, I've reduced my rating to a 1 star. Apparently gamers who are playing this game on a quad core computer will have problems with the game when you enter certain buildings especially small houses or shacks. Many players just tried to avoid houses throughout the entire game so that it wouldn't crash. Unfortunately there is a part called Tranquility Lane, where you must enter a house to continue the game... in this house is where the most freezes happen. I've done very much research on this crash and it seems to only be happening on Quad Core systems. There is a fix that has been created by a ... OK, I had to edit this review. Not as big as Oblivion or Morrowind, but just as much fun. This game is not Oblivion with guns though. There is a very big difference with the fighting and VATS system. Also, the leveling system is still very similar to the other two Fallouts, which is way different than the Elder Scrolls series. The visuals are absolutely stunning and the gameplay is fun and challenging. The people you meet seem to have real personalities and can the way you interact with them can change the game very much. I like the leveling up system, and too me it still feels like the Fallout universe even if it is now 1st person. Just make sure your PC can handle this game. I have a very nice gaming machine that I built myself, and it can barely run this game on Ultra, so I just keep the graphics on high. (My PC: MSI Geforce NX88000GT OC, Intel Core2 Quad 6600 cpu OC'd, 8 GB of Ram, XFX nForce 680i Lt Mobo, Antec TruePower Quatro 1000w ps)(I am actually thinking of upgrading my gpu, because that is the only thing holding me back from playing it on ultra) If all of that is gibberish to you and you don't have a newer gaming PC than you probably can't play this game on it. Check out the specs for the game before you buy this. This game is definitely not for kids: the language is very explicit and the violence is very bloody and extreme.

After some difficult circumstances you are thrust into the out side world where you learn that the human race could sustain it self no longer. Mans hatred of it self plunged the planet into a nuclear winter, and it becomes very clear that in order to survive you must make some radical changes in the way you think. For the world is now awesomely destroyed and dangerously powerful. This ERG allows you to experience what it could possibly be like after a nuclear holocaust in a free flowing atmosphere. your character is able to travel any where on the massive map. Talking to anyone, making many possible decisions that ultimately change the outcome of the game weather it be good or bad depending on ... PROS: - Great presentation with a lots of details - Well achieved post-apocalyptic scenarios - Huge detailed cities and landscapes with a lot of freedom to do pretty much whatever you want - Every decision you make affects how the world around you reacts - Classic Fallout story that doesn’t disappoint - Interesting combat modes - Great animations and effects (specially the gore stuff) - Leveling up for perks is a lot of fun and becomes addictive - Lots of cool & creative weapons - Long single player campaign (around 25 hours that can be expanded to over 100 with all of the side quests and they are fully re-playable as an evil or good character) CONS: - Some minor bugs & glitches - A little more details in the characters would have been good, but they are ok - No multiplayer, but hey! ... Fallout never had one so just contemplate the greatness of its singleplayer. *Just as a WARNING, this is a Role Playing Game and not a First Person Shooter, so don’t except Halo-like action, its different, but equally enjoyable. *Another warning on this game is that it is not suitable for kids, the dialogs and goreish action is for mature gamers. OVERALL THOUGHTS: It is hard to compare this game with first 2 games, as the gameplay mechanics are a bit different, but even standing in the shadow of its predecessors Fallout 3 stands on its own as great game. You’ll immerse into the best post-apocalyptic world ever made You must have in mind that the developers of this game are the same guys from The Elders Scroll IV: Oblivion, and at first you might feel like playing a modification of that game, but after a while you realize that Fallout 3 is completely unique and in a lot of ways better than Oblivion. Fans of the series will most probably love the return of the post apocalyptic RPG trades and for new comers the games takes a little time to get used to, but it eventually grows on you in a really nice way and you’ll enjoy all of the huge amount of gadgets, weapons, quests, side quests, characters, humor, enemy dismemberment and complete freedom that Fallout 3 offers. It is definitely a must-have for hardcore gamers and a serious contender for “game of the year award”. An instant new classic for all gamers, just as its predecessors.
