1956 Richard Burton's Alexander; Fredric March's Philip
Alexander, the charismatic Prince of Macedonia (Richard Burton), stirs his father's, King Philip's (Fredric March), fatherly pride & masculine rivalry. Their oft times tenuous relationship is what drives the film. Their struggles aren't unusual for power dynasties. King Philip has doubts that he fathered Alexander because his wife, Olympias (Danielle Darrieux), who is fed up with Philip's marital infedelity, plants that seed of doubt in his mind in spite. March's King Philip rose suddenly to a high social status without being accepted by the existing highest social class. Macedonia, under Philip's unlearn-ed rule, is little more than a warring state. Thus, Philip believes he can compensate for his own lack of knowledge by hiring Aristotle (Barry Jones) to be Alexander's teacher. Aristotle ... Alexander, the charismatic Prince of Macedonia (Richard Burton), stirs his father's, King Philip's (Fredric March), fatherly pride & masculine rivalry. Their oft times tenuous relationship is what drives the film. Their struggles aren't unusual for power dynasties. Aristotle successfully trains Alexander to believe not only in the superiority of Greek Culture, but also, that it is his responsibility to make it global. It is probably the first known example of an intellectualized hegemony. After the King's assasinated by his wife, Alexander ascends to the throne. He gains the alliances of 7 major Greek cities to march South & East to conquer the world. 'Alexander the Great', in 334 BC, created an army which was determined to conquer the world. He conquered twice the size of what was then considered 'Western Civilization'. He died at 33yo having reached the borders of what is now India! Richard Burton's Alexander is befitting of the title "Great." Through Burton's style of speech delivery & brilliant use of camera angles to accentuate his mannerisms, highlight the nationalism, egotism & arrogating idealism of Alexander so that they are made ever so evident. Burton's confidence as an actor trained in the classics is what makes his Alexander much more convincing than the latest 2005 one. However, what has been censored out by the Hayes Code is the well documented same-sex sexuality that was so characteristic of Greek men's culture. This 1958 version doesn't go far enough to show the depth of the bonds between the men with whom Alexander associated. It does show the Aristotelean view of women as breeding incubators & property of men. However, as Olympias reveals, just because Greek culture was predominantly patriarchal, didn't mean that women couldn't be independent in both their thoughts & actions. Although, that aspect is not explored nearly enough. But, women weren't the focus of this version of the life of Alexander the Great. His relationship with his father is the important central theme, since it is quite likely that it factually was very influential in Alexander's life~
