    Alexander, the charismatic Prince of Macedonia (Richard Burton), stirs his father's, King Philip's (Fredric March), fatherly pride & masculine rivalry. Their oft times tenuous relationship is what drives the film. Their struggles aren't unusual for power dynasties. King Philip has doubts that he fathered Alexander because his wife, Olympias (Danielle Darrieux), who is fed up with Philip's marital infedelity, plants that seed of doubt in his mind in spite. March's King Philip rose suddenly to a high social status without being accepted by the existing highest social class. Macedonia, under Philip's unlearn-ed rule, is little more than a warring state.
