    Leica M Summicron 35mm

    The 35mm focal length is the most renown lens in the entire linup of leica rangefinder lenses - IMHO. Hopefully getting the counting correct, we can see 5 versions of this lens from the early 1950th (Leica M3 introduced 1954) until today. The "Summicron" indicates a 1:2 lens, whereas a "Summilux" is faster with 1:1,4 and a "Summarit" slower with 1:2,5. This does not give any rating on the quaility of the lens, just the apperture ratio. The Summicron version is - also IMHO - the most versatile one: Gives you enough "speed" to shoot in available light situations, small size and weight of the lens/body combination and money spent for the gem. The versions v1-v4 represent "classic" optical design, wheras V5 introduces a aspheric (ASPH)lens ...

    Leica Summicron M 2/35 ASPH

    Perfect allround lens. Very compact, can always be on the camera. Not too small, can be handled with gloves. This is why we love Leica. Nice angle on the M9, perfect for travel, street and people (maybe not portrait). Aperture 2.0 can be used without visible optical effects and gives natural bokeh. Good handling, especially uncritical to focus. Allows night photography with open aperture and ISO 2500 at 1/20s. Finally it is not cheap, but in a good balance to the camera mentioned. Considered also Zeiss, Voigtländer or pre-ASPH Leica's, but makes it sense to look especially with such an everyday lens only for the money?
