These are great mics for the money, great clarity. However when I save enough I will upgrade. But for my current application they are a great value! Stands are excellent well built, cords well are cords!

MXL 990/991 microphone package is a really good deal and sound great, too.
I play Country Gospel in a band at my church. Well, I've been performing for a long time, you see. The MXL 990 is the best microphone I've owned so far. I've experimented with plenty of mics of all types and own quiet a few, mostly vintage art deco style mics, but this is my first studio mic. I am very impressed with the sound quality. I can scream and scream into this and it will not distort. I use an inexpensive ART MP tube pre-amp for phantom power and a T.C.Helicon harmony-g and sometimes a T.C. Helicon Create XT voice processor with the 990, a vintage aquablue tuck and roll Kustom 150 PA for live performances and my vocals sound incredible. Even without the enhancement of sound effects, the MXL 990 sounds great! It is true what they say, beautiful bright ... I play Country Gospel in a band at my church. Well, I've been performing for a long time, you see. The MXL 990 is the best microphone I've owned so far. I highly recommend this particular product because of its quality sound and the price (will not bankrupt your band). I think that it is great for performing live songs (it's less expensive than most of my live performance mics and its sound quality is noticably better). The plastic case fits well and will protect this jewel for decades to come. The MXL 991 is O.K. too. I own quite a few guitars, and all have built in pick-ups, you see. So I have not used the 991 all that much except with my accoustic mandolin. I have no complaints. I don't use it that much, as previously stated, but its just as pretty as the 990. I have other speacialty mics that I use for my acoustic endevours. It does however need a smaller than normal microphone mount or clip. And with that in mind, I would recommend buying the MXL 990/991 package with their shockmounts included, as it has been a pain to find them elsewhere. They can be found however. You will not be disappointed with this pair of microphones, unless of course, you are a real DIVA (and then you'll probabaly never ever be satisfied). They are gonna last for a long while, with the appropriate care needed for studio style microphones. So go buy them, you won't regret your purchase.

It's a must-have great professional microphone for your own studio.
MXL 990 is the best condenser microphone for it's price/quality ratio on my opinion. Very sensitive, true frequencies, well-made. The quality is superior while the price is very affordable. This microphone requires several mandatory things: Studio room (with echo absorbers), Pop filter and Shockmount. For sure you have to get the best cable you can afford as it's also not included. I've purchased these items separately but I have got this 991 instrument mic with 990 for recording instruments, which is awesome too.MXL 990 is the best condenser microphone for it's price/quality ratio on my opinion. Clean, quiet, and inexpensive.
I used to own North Country Sounds Recording Studio in the 70's ans 80's. I had tens of thousands of dollars in equipment. At NCS I produced records for The Nubs, Tyler Capone, and GG Allen and many others. Those records now sell on Ebay for hundreds of dollars. So, it's fair to say I know what I'm talking about. I'd been out of music for more than a few years. I play acoustic music, and decided to get back into it last year. A few months ago I decided to do some recording. I've been doing digital video editing for years, and was comfortable working with a computer based editing system. After seeing what Protools did, I decided to go with a software studio. I bought an M-Box with Protools. Wanted a large diaphragm condenser mic, and saw the MXL 2 mic package. I've been very ... I used to own North Country Sounds Recording Studio in the 70's ans 80's. I've been very pleased with the sound I've gotten with these mics. They are quiet, clean, and, more important, I like the way my voice sounds through them. My 1964 Martin 12 string sounds just as good recorded through these mics as it does live. All mics color the sound in some way. A $2000 mic might sound a little better, but not $1960 better. If you want to make decent recordings on a budget, these are the way to go. It's not the toys, but the ability to use them that makes the difference. Bottom line? With an investment of $220 between the M-Box and the mics, I've got a recording system that blows away the old studio, and I'm well on my way to releasing my first CD.

The 991 gave such an improvement over the Sure I have used for years it is unreal and the same goes for the 990. Of course they are also far more feedback prone and require phantom power. I added an acoustic screen along with the shock mount and pop filter to enable me to boost gain with speakers in position and control feedback. Even on my simple 4 track cassette Porta-studio I am getting sound quality that rivals what I get in excellent studios. Unbelievable value for the price. I have not attempted to use for live work and probably won't due to the sensitivity and feedback issues but in the controlled environment of the studio they are fantastic!
