Product Information

Callous hustler Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is busy working on his next deal when he receives word that his estranged father has died. After traveling back to Ohio from Los Angeles for the funeral, Charlie is miffed to find that although he will receive a vintage Buick from his father's estate, he isn't getting a cent of the three-million-dollar fortune. Instead, Charlie finds that the money has been left to the caretakers of his institutionalized autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Once he gets over the shock of the existence of a brother of whom he seems to have no recollection, Charlie kidnaps Raymond and heads cross-country in the Buick in an attempt to get a cut of the inheritance to pay off some of his failing deals. However, during their adventure, Charlie not only learns how to deal with Raymond's many idiosyncrasies, but he also actually begins to care about his older brother, surprising even himself with his ability to love and his realization that money isn't necessarily the most important thing. Barry Levinson directs Ron Bass's script with impeccable timing and a wonderful sense of humor.

    Awards worthy movie - This time they got it right.

    This has been one of my favorite movies for many years. It highlights what it is like to be autistic and how that impacts family. The surprise of finding out you have a family member you were unaware of and they had a disability was certainly a challenge to a lead character. Since it was based upon actual circumstances made it believable. I would recommend it to the young adults of today since most have probably not seen it.

    There's NO Movie Like This One---It's A KEEPER!

    I love that this movie is a one of a kind. There has NEVER been another movie that could come close to doing what this movie did for Dustin Hoffman and for Tom Cruise. They each gave stunning performances and it's a good thing that Hoffman was already a well-established actor otherwise he might be deemed a misfit in the acting arena. His performance of an autistic man has got to have been one of the toughest roles he has ever played and he did it so well that I almost got caught up in feeling sorry for him! Tom Cruise took on a role that allowed him to shine as someone who was able to put his way of life on the back burner and to realize that from somewhere deep down inside of him he was able to pull out some compassion for his brother; a brother that could have ruined him socially.     Watch and gain understanding.

    Whoever paired Cruise and Hoffman knew what they were doing. Good chemistry. Hoffman nails the part. I hope people who watch it have a better understanding of autism - if you look past the handicap, you will find someone worth knowing. The movie does drag along at times, but is well worth watching.
