In 1999, a set of small wooden boxes found in a flea market in Tangier was opened to reveal a stunning historical find: a treasure trove of more than five hundred glass stereoscopic negatives, along with handwritten notes, taken by an anonymous French officer between 1916 and 1918. This book presents a number of these previously unseen images, which were taken across the Western Front and capture all aspects of war, from the quotidian and banal to the cruel and brutal. It includes images from the 1917 Nivelle Offensive and from the 1918 German Spring Offensive, and the subsequent allied counterattack; it also offers views of Ypres and Arras, the Somme and the Marne, and presents images of soldiers not just from the French army, but from the British and German armies as well. A truly unprecedented historical document, Tangier Archive offers the seemingly impossible: a chance to see World War I through fresh eyes, a century on.

Captain Givord was interested in aviation and modern weapons and so we see many images of aeroplanes, artillery, motor vehicles and tanks. In fact the diversity of his subjects is so wide this book should have a huge appeal across whole strata of our military world. So it works for photography buffs, historians, Great War aficionados and the gamut of hardware enthusiasts. This book is a complete package. Honestly, this is one of the nicest and I would say finest archive photography books I have seen. Full stop. If you have even a remote interest in photography or the Great War then you have to get a copy., :"If you never tire of looking at Great War images then this is the book for you, and if you want a one volume glimpse into our ancestors' wartime past, then The Tangier Archive is ideal.", The collection gives us an insight into everything from uniforms and technology, to the way the landscape was destroyed and an insight into battlefield conditions. The photos are simply stunning and they reproduced very well in this handsome edition. If you never tire of looking at Great War images then this is the book for you and if you want a one volume glimpse into out ancestors wartime past then The Tangier Archive is ideal., This is a fantastic collection, and Uniform Press should be commended for the quality of the publication.
