THE Maui Guidebook - Must Have!
When we began planning our trip to Maui, I knew this was the book I wanted. As we had been to Kauai a few years ago and borrowed Doughty's Kauai guidebook (ended up carrying it with us everywhere and had to buy our friend's a new one,) I knew I liked his style. Andrew Doughty lives in the places he writes guidebooks about. Not just for a couple of months, but for a couple of years. He doesn't just give you a well-planned, detailed book of great places to see and things to do, he also tells you what time of day, what time of year, etc. is best to see the place. He makes it his business to seek out new places that have been previously missing from other Maui guidebooks, and continually updates his guidebook so you will know if a road is now open that used to be closed to the public. ... He doesn't just give you a well-planned, detailed book of great places to see and things to do, he also tells you what time of day, what time of year, etc. is best to see the place. He makes it his business to seek out new places that have been previously missing from other Maui guidebooks, and continually updates his guidebook so you will know if a road is now open that used to be closed to the public. Doughty doesn't get paid by these resorts and businesses to recommend them; he travels incognito. You will occasionally find places he recommends that you avoid for one reason or another. My favorite things about this guidebook: * Well-organized - I can find the section on the side of the island that I will be exploring and see which places are a must see and which places are a no go. * Maps - The maps are the best I've seen. Doughty includes mile markers and easy directions of how to get to trailheads. * Packing list - If you don't like to think too hard about packing, that's okay! They've done it for you. There is a recommended packing list that is very helpful. * Easy reading - This book is actually pretty funny, if you read it straight through, but the humor doesn't at all get in the way of the travel information. It only makes it fun to read. * Great photos - It's like a sneak preview of what you'll get to see when you get there. * Rating system - Doughty marks some activities or places with a little gold bar icon or a blue diamond icon to let you know that these are places he highly recommends. This really helps in trip planning and prioritizing. * Activities Section - There is a section for each different activity with a list of vendors and Doughty's top pick (and warnings against some companies.) * Hotel/Resort Critique - You can find many critiques in the guidebook, but they are also online at the book's website. At the time of this review, there was not a need for a password, as there had been in times past. My husband and I haven't made our trip yet, but I know when we do, this book will come on every adventure with us in our backpack. If you are planning to see Maui - you MUST have this book!! If you visit any other islands, check to see if you can get another one of Doughty's guidebooks for that island.

I purchased this book in a local bookstore, wish I had realized it was such a winner I could have bought it on ebay for 1/2 the price! This book is VERY well done with pro's and con's of visiting different spots and sights on Maui. It gives excellent suggestions and tells you everything you need to know about visiting the Island of Maui. I have read all the Maui tourism books and this one is at the top of my list! Concise, easy to read guides, From someone who has spent plenty of time researching all the sights!
