A Classic of its Genre
the movie is a classic of its genre with outstanding performances by its stellar cast along with cameos by jack la motta of former boxing fame and willie mosconi, reputably the best straight pool player of all time, who was also a technical advisor for the film; also exceptional work by the director in black and white filming (one of its academy awards). the special features were excellent as well (i was especially struck by the metaphor of the cripple). Pool saw a surge in popularity in america after the Hustler, then again in the nineties after the Color of Money (for which Paul Newman finally won a film oscar). I bought the movie Dvd The Hustler for my boyfriend as a Christmas gift. My boyfriend said it was a movie he always wanted to see. As a child he use to watch the famous pool hustler "Fats Minesota" The film stars Jackie Gleason, who plays "Minesota Fats" and Paul Newman, a young compulsive gambler who struggles with this disease. Newman is in his prime and so sexy in this classic movie. Its about addiction, life and love.
