About this product

Product Information

A big novel about a small town... When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty fa ade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Reviews
A study of provincial life, with a large cast and multiple, interlocking plots, drawing inspiration from Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot... The Casual Vacancy immerses the reader in a richly peopled, densely imagined world...intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny., The Casual Vacancy , JK Rowling's first adult novel, is sometimes funny, often startlingly well observed....Jane Austen herself would admire the way [Rowling] shows the news of Barry's death spreading like a virus round Pagford., There are plenty of pleasures to be had in The Casual Vacancy ....Parts of the story would be tonally of a piece with any Richard Price or Dennis Lehane novel, or an episode of The Wire ., I had come under the spell of a great novel....A big, ambitious, brilliant, profane, funny, deeply upsetting and magnificently eloquent novel of contemporary England, rich with literary intelligence....This is a deeply moving book by somebody who understands both human beings and novels very, very deeply., A vivid read with great, memorable characters and a truly emotional payoff....Rowling captures the humanity in everyone, even if that humanity is not always a pretty sight., The Casual Vacancy is a complete joy to read....a stunning, brilliant, outrageously gripping and entertaining evocation of British society today., This book represents a truckload of shrewdness.... There were sentences I underlined for the sheer purpose of figuring out how English words could be combined so delightfully....genuinely moving., An insanely compelling page-turner.... The Casual Vacancy is a comedy, but a comedy of the blackest sort, etched with acid and drawn with pitch....Rowling proves ever dexterous at launching multiple plot lines that roar along simultaneously, never entangling them except when she means to. She did not become the world's bestselling author by accident. She knows down in her bones how to make you keep turning the pages.

Ms. Rowling writes very well !

This is not my usual fare. Quite a gritty book in my opinion, though it is probably an apt description of the people/situations involved.

  • An enjoyable and thought provoking book.

Although J.K. Rowling did not experience outstanding reviews for this book, as she has for the Harry Potter series, anyone who is involved in local politics and enjoys small town living, with it's conspiracies, plots, hidden agendas, etc. will enjoy this book. The characters range in age from toddler to retiree, and each age group has sub-plots that keep you turning the page. If you have empathy for the under privileged, angst for the youth, and contempt for the "haves" you'll really enjoy this book.

  • JK Rowling Breaks Free Of Harry Potter & Does It In Style

If there is one literary surprise this whole year, it is J.K. Rowling's venture into a post- Harry Potter world, "The Casual Vacancy." Rowling has created a novel that proves she was born to put pen to paper. "Vacancy" feels as if it has its own beating heart by the time you're reaching the final stretch. Firstly, let's talk genre. As good as a novel can be, it usually will not transcend its own genre. It needs to follow certain beats and rules to work. For example, Lee Child is one of the greatest genre writers putting out books today. His novels don't transcend their genres, they merely master them. What "The Casual Vacancy" does is different (not to say novelists like Child are not brilliant). Rowling's story exists without easy classification and this is not due to my shortcoming as a ...

  • Great Book. Fans of J.K.Rowling and great fiction will be happy

J.K.Rowling is a genius when it comes to character creation. Adult fans who read all the Harry Potters will see that when they read this book. Little slow in the beginning as she sets the characters up. I had to create a cheat sheet until I started to remember who was married to who and did what in the community. It makes you think of how you treat people. Great study on how one mans death effects the entire community and how other people acctually think of you.

  • LARGE PRINT as needed.

Moving and need large print books. This one looks GREAT. Have read some of her books before, so looking forward to reading as soon as we get settled. Think it will be a book to pass on to my family who love JKR's books. Thank you.
