About this product

Product Information

The differences between the haves and have-nots in turn-of-the-century England is stark, but two sisters caught in the middle aim to close that gap by softening the prejudices of the aristocrats who love all that money can obtain and reaching out to the working class people just trying to get by. 'Howards End' weaves 140 minutes of drama and tragedy mixed with subtle humor as the enlightened philanthropic Schlegal sisters engage the capitalist Wilcoxes to lend a helping hand to the commoner Basts. The movie stars Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, and Vanessa Redgrave. It is available on DVD and was released by Sony Pictures in 1999 with a PG rating.

  • Still an interesting film just over long

Normally I would not be interested in a film like this. I just happened to watch it on cable in the 1990's and thought it was interesting. Story really of three families. Yes, you do have to count the Bast's. I did not like those characters the Bast's. Feel sorry for them because they kept doing things wrong. Leonard was mad at the world. No, not for me. Emma did deserve her Oscar for the role. The whole story with these families based on a house in the country. You just have to watch it. Yes, everything in the film based on his house. The one thing I fault the film on is being over long. This is an early DVD so NO extras on it. Good to see the film wide screen.

  • 1992 Thompson, Hopkins, Redgrave & Bonham Carter Drama

Based upon E.M. Forster's 1910 novel & adapted for film by screenwriter, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, this film was named Best Picture of 1992 by the National Board of Review. Directed by James Ivory, "Howard's End" is an Edwardian era romance of a different kind. Here's why: A woman of wealth who's dying, Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), is bent upon leaving her country estate (named 'Howards End'), to a woman of a different social class, Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson). A mild-mannered Londoner, her home's to be taken away, with no means to stop it. Henry Wilcox (Sir Anthony Hopkins), Ruth's husband, is a uppity classist businessman, who doesn't divulge his wife's wishes to anyone, even Margaret. After Ruth dies, Henry & Margaret marry. Class-crossing during Edwardian times was socially ...

  • Good love story

You have to love this type of movie. It is a love story of sorts. I thoroughly enjoyed it and tried to catch it everytime it was on cable, now I own it and I can watch it as often as I like.
