Synopsis
From bestselling author and illustrator Eric Carle, the creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar , comes another classic tale about one very quiet cricket. A perfect gift to share with the child or grandchild in your life. One day a tiny cricket is born and meets a big cricket who chirps his welcome. The tiny cricket tries to respond, but there is no sound. The quiet cricket then makes his way into the world, meeting one insect after another, each of whom greets the little cricket with a cheery hello--the hum of a bee, the whirr of a dragonfly, the whisper of a praying mantis. The cricket rubs his wings together each time, but nothing happens, not a sound. Until the day he meets another cricket, a female, and something different happens . . . As children turn the page on this wonderful moment, they are greeted with a surprise--an actual chirp! Full of Eric Carle's gorgeous and lush collage art, a gentle rhythmic text for read-alouds, and a wonder-inducing surprise at the end, The Very Quiet Cricket remains an all-time favorite from one of the true masters of picture-book making. Batteries are replaceable. Please use two 1.5 volt L1131 button cell batteries. Eric Carle book

Eric Carle's "Very" books are the most unique and enticing of all children's books. The Very Quiet Cricket is no exception. It has a lesson to learn and a surprise (sound) at the end. Wonderful!

  • A real DELIGHT for the YOUNG! Contains element of SOUND

If you enjoy other Eric Carle books (such as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar") then you will enjoy this one also. It is written and illustrated in a similar style. Simple but appealing, colorful illustrations will engage the young child. It is a story about a little cricket who tries and tries but although he rubs his wings together, "nothing happens!" Finally at the end, he learns to chirp! In the back of the book (as you turn the last page) is a most unusual element of actually getting to listen to the cricket chirping. This will delight and entertain young children for a long time. I liked the fact that there is some science being taught as well (words like "locust," "luna moth" and "cicada"). A real fine addition to the young child's library!

  • Perfect title for this children's book

This book is an excellent children's book. My grandchildren have worn one completely out, and cried because the cricket sound did not work anymore. That is the reason I replaced the book on ebay. As a former kindergarten teacher, I highly recommend this book to any parent for their child. It tells of the struggles of a young cricket as he grows and tries to communicate with other insects by rubbing his wings together to make a sound. However, he was always too young until the very end of the book when he met another cricket. The sound made as you turn the last page is very realistic and sound so much like a cricket that my grandchildren have looked all around and inside the book for the real cricket. It is delightful!

  • The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle (1990)

I have always enjoyed the stories AND the illustrations of the masterful Eric Carle. Each of my four children were brought up with many of his books in our own personal library. This particular book is so special, for if you're a first-time reader with no spoilers having been shared with you, the ending is so surprising. Not the fact that the cricket FINALLY gets validated in feeling special like the other creatures (becase most readers would be hoping that would be the case!), but in the life-like sound of the cricket that emerges out of the night air! It's absolutely a MUST-have in children's libraries! I'm glad I now OWN the book instead of borrowing it from our area library!

  • The Very Quiet Cricket!

I grew up reading many Eric Carle books and this one is definitely one of my favorites! I bought it to share with my children and the little story along with the wonderful illustrations is highly enjoyable and the ending is so serene yet exciting! The first time I read this with both my kids they wanted me to read it again and again! This is definitely one of our favorite Eric Carle books around the house over here and absolutely perfect for bedtime!
