  • Mr Sedaris has issues... to say the least

I'm a big fan of snarky, witty humor essays so I was excited to get this book, based on what I've read/heard about David Sedaris. Granted there is a lot of humor to be mined from a troubled or complicated childhood but what I find in Mr Sedaris' writing is a deep, mean streak underneath the snark. I enjoyed two of the essays enormously (the Christmas elf and the school play) but was taken aback by the reoccurring theme in his essays of child or infant injury and death. What is that about? I like writing to challenge my thinking but continually wincing whilst reading is not entertaining or enlightening to me. Also, he more than once refers to characters who are developmentally challenged (a p.c. term I don't prefer) as retards. Seriously?

  • Somewhat funny, strange

This book includes several short stories. Like another reviewer said, I can't tell if they are totally made up or if there is any truth to them??? I found one story to be very distubring, about a baby. Sorry, I'm a mother of 5 and my youngest is still a baby. So, that chapter bothered me and I have found it hard to finish the book. I feel I have a good sense of humor and even enjoy strange and crude humor. I just didn't find "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" funny. It had me pulled in like the previous chapter about Macy's but the baby was just too much. I won't give up on David Sedaris. I ordered a few of his books to read over the winter and I plan to continue on!

  • Holidays on Ice

I buy this book every year as a Christmas gift for anyone who has not experienced the literary humor of David Sedaris. Brilliantly funny, Sedaris takes his readers for a ride down memory lane with imagery and humor that anyone can relate to, especially as it pertains to "families" at Holiday Time! Buy it over and over again and give it to your best friends!

  • HOLIDAYS ON ICE

I bought this book for my December Book Club meeting. It sounding like it was going to be a funny entertaining take on the craziness of the holidays-ice as in ice cubes in a drink but I was so disappointed. The humor was black and morbid and I found myself skipping over it to get it done. Our book club talked about it for 10 minutes and then dropped it. They had read his other books and said they were much better. Maybe I will give them a chance someday.

  • Great book and author

Very funny stories, David Sedaris is absolutly funny this is my third book of his. I highly rcomend any of his books.
