Woman in Man's brave new world of personal computers
I am glad publishers have reprinted this previously hard-to-find Susan Phillips' book. This was the first book of SEP that I read and it was fascinating. It tells the tale of the rise of the personal computer from fictional rivals of Apple and Microsoft, 3 young men and 1 ex-socialite (nickname Hot Shot) who start a shoe-string computer company from a garage. It does have some references to the real pioneers, such as Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, and the actual events of the time are fascinating in and of themselves. The 4 main characters, though, are so fully drawn that they seem as three dimensional as the real people. Susannah leaves her upscale upbringing to hop on the back of a Harley with Sam, who has a vision of the future. He wants to bring a computer to the public. His friend Yank ... The inter-relations of these 4 characters plus the fascinating growth of the computer industry in the 1970s/80s is a can't-put-down combination.
