Wonderful set of DVIDs!
I purchased this DVD set for my father who loves the old westerns. The set was all I had hoped for with good story lines for that time period and being able to get all the seasons produced was a fabulous treat. The characters are what you would expect, a matriarch of a wealthy family that had settled in Stockton California during the old west and there are adult children each with their own story lines that connect back to the main matriarch of the family.I purchased this DVD set for my father who loves the old westerns. The set was all I had hoped for with good story lines for that time period and being able to get all the seasons produced was a fabulous treat. Pristine, uncut viewing of this unusual horse opera. Start with a western starring a female lead, throw in three gorgeous hunks and one babe, stir in the unusual plot line (for this era) of a "wood's colt" looking for a home and you have a recipe for one of the best series on television. The panoramic vistas of California made this an unusual western. Compared with the painted backdrops of the Ponderosa and the Cartright clan on Bonanza, the sets are vibrant and believable. The stories are diverse and the characters are fully developed from the first scene. Brash, larger-than-life Nick. Sensible big brother Jarrod. Coltish Audra. Sensitive, damaged Heath. The Big Valley Season One
Filmed in the sixties, it is a typical western storyline, a rich family, the good guys etc. versus the various hazards of the Old West, rustlers, bank robbers, measles and dramatic stuff like doing an appendectomy on a train by the guy that's not really a doctor! By today's standards, pretty lame in the transition of the shots of a rider actually outside, to shots of the "stage set" for the closeups and dialogue. And the plots weren't a whole lot better, but the story lines are still fun... it's what most of us were raised on. :) What is rather interesting are some of the players, back then some were just starting out, (William Shatner) others were already big (Charles Bronson) Something most famous actors of today, wouldn't do... TV. But the ... Almost as if once the camera was off, the banter and feelings didn't change. It's easy to see them as brothers, sister & Mother. You almost feel as if they hung out together off stage as well. That makes the show fun to watch! So make a bowl of popcorn, fire up the DVD and sit back for a little reminder of how you used to spend once a week wishing your name was Barkley too! Oh... maybe you can figure out what happened to Eugene! He went missing and was never mentioned after just a few episodes. :)

From the opening episode, "Palms of Glory", when Heath (a very young, very blond and very laconic Lee Majors) joins the clan as the late Tom Barkley's illegitimate son to "Last Train from the Fair" where young and beautiful Audra (Linda Evans) suffers an attack of appendicitis on a train in the middle of nowhere, there's tons of western fun to be had here. Throw in some brash Nick (Peter Breck), thoughtful Jarrod (Richard Long) and, of course, matriach Victoria (Barbara Stanwick) and you have a terrific series that is sure to take you back. Not only will you get all 30 episodes, but you'll finally be able to see all those small scenes cut for length in syndication - a few of them are real ... The Barkleys are back in this solid 5 DVD set that contains all 30 episodes from the first season. The Big Valley
This was one of my favorite shows when it was on TV. Big Valley is a western serial much like "Bonanza", "Gunsmoke", and "The Wild, Wild West". Since it was filmed a bit later than the others the film quality and capabilities are better. The scenes appear more realistic and less like a set. The acting is suberb. Victoria Barkley, played by Barbara Stanwyck, is the wise matriarch of a family of four grown men and a young woman. With her guidance they all get along great, no sibling rivalry, and they effectively run the biggest ranch in Stockton, CA.
