About this product

Product Information

National Bestseller "A blend of breathtaking artistry, encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world. . . and ardent commitment to the supremacy of nature." -- San Francisco Chronicle In this beautiful novel, Barbara Kingsolver, New York Times bestselling author of Demon Copperhead and The Poisonwood Bible, weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives inhabiting the forested mountains and struggling small farms of southern Appalachia. Over the course of one humid summer, as the urge to procreate overtakes the lush countryside, this novel's intriguing protagonists--a reclusive wildlife biologist, a young farmer's wife marooned far from home, and a pair of elderly, feuding neighbors--face disparate predicaments but find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with whom they necessarily share a place. Their discoveries are embedded inside countless intimate lessons of biology, the realities of small farming, and the final, urgent truth that humans are only one piece of life on earth.

  • Community Values in Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver contains characters who preach, but the wealth of the land she creates here comes from descriptive details and and understanding of how interrelated biological systems cooperate with one another. Each character's awareness of these processes varies with background and attitudes regarding the land. Not one but three stories enjoin here with themes whose power rests in their relationship to one another. The first story is Deanna Wolfe's affirmation of the natural world, or what is left of it. The second story contrasts Lusa Maluf Landowski's values with those of her husband's family, though a reader will find that Lusa's involvement in the community causes this story to interweave with the third. The third story also creates a bridge back to the first ...

  • This will be one of the best books you ever read!

I bought this book for my mother, as I have already read it three times. Truly a beautiful piece of literature by one of the best authors of this generation. A perfect read, you'll have a hard time putting it down. Be sure to check out Mrs. Kingsolver's other books as well.

  • Excellent Read

The book was an excellent read. A wonderful tale of lives, communities, nature and circumstances all woven into a delightful and poignant story. A great balance of fantasy and realism which makes a great book.
