Excellent Scanner, Run using XP if possible
These remarks relate to my experience using the Microtek S400 scanner while running Windows 7 Home Premium. Installation 1- Installation was a chore. Windows 7 never identified the scanner properly, always thought it was a 4800. No way to manually change model in driver. Once installed the scanner didn't send image to PC. 2- Plan B - Scour Microtek site for fix. It was to install the XP program for the scanner from Microtek. Still identifies as a 4800 but now the scanner sends image to PC. Turns out that the s400 is a marketing name and the scanner type is a 4800, its on the device label at the rear of the scanner. Use 1- I usually use the scanner as an import device in Abode PhotoShop CS3. This is straight-forward. Select import and the Microtek ScanWizard interface opens. A lot of ... A lot of different parameters are adjustable prior to scanning. This can reduce the amount of PS CS3 adjustments you need to make to the final image. 2- The images are very detailed, very smooth looking. There is a large dynamic range in the scanned image. This is an improvement over my UMAX 3450. Environmental Issues 1- Speed of scanning is much quicker than the UMAX 3450 it replaced. It is USB 2.0 speed and transfer of scanned image is also quite rapid. 2- This scanner makes a fair amount of noise when running a scan. You'll not have to look over to see the light leaking out to know it is working. 3- Wall wart power supply keeps power supply heat isolated from the scanner. Takes up three spaces on many power strips. A short extension cord run from the power supply to the power strip will eliminate this hoggishness. 4- Supplied USB cable is short and contains a choke. I did not see any visible differences in the final image between using the short, choked cable and a standard, longer USB cable. Once I solved my cable routing issue I went back to using the supplied cable. There did not appear to be any transfer time differences between the two cables but I did not have a stop watch out. 5- Power on/off button on front is handy. I prefer this to the always on scanners I've used in the past. Overall I purchased this scanner for scanning postcards and stamps from my collection. It came with a 35mm transparency adapter which I've not yet used but plan to some day. So far it has served my needs quite well.
