The story follows a young girl as she grows up surrounded by a group of fingersmiths, whose devious ways mask their kindness in raising her. But when she is embroiled in a scheme to help a con man, she learns what deviancy really is, while also finding herself sexually attracted to another woman.

Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins) was left as a young child when her parents died. Forced to survive by herself by living on the street, she was with thieves and confidence men. One day Sue is taken in by Mrs. Sucksby (Imelda Staunton), who wants to keep her off the streets. However, Sucksby's friend Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans) is familiar with Sue's former circle and lures her into a crime scheme. athe scheme is for Sue to land a job as a maid to Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy), a young woman living with her uncle (Charles Dance). Maud is the heiress to a large family fortune when she marries. Sue's part is to act as a confidante to Maud, so when Richard courts her, Sue will help convince Maud to marry Richard. As Sue's feelings become more apparent, she learns the situation is not as she'd been told. "Fingersmith" is another lesbian themed story by Sara Waters. It was first produced for the BBC where it aired in Spring 2005. Waters also wrote the lesbian novel "Tipping the Velvet." Both are period-dramas about the exploitations and sexualities of British women during the Victorian era.

Could have been better named because I was totally throw off with the title.
Sometimes when the movie reviews are written on the back of the box, and/or online reviews are not accurate. This was pretty accurate and more engaging than I expected. The story was good and I was surprised with the twist and turns of the story line.

If Oliver Twist Were A Lesbian...
If Oliver Twist were a lesbian, you'd get something like FINGERSMITH. This tale could have been written by Charles Dickens. Gangs of criminals in Victorian London, a horrific mental asylum, rags-to-riches orphans, charming but evil men with ulterior motives...it's all very Dickensian, plus a semi-explicit lesbian love scene. Not everyone makes it out alive, and one of the deaths is especially sad. Great plot with enough twists to keep you guessing. If Oliver Twist were a lesbian, you'd get something like FINGERSMITH.
