  • Riveting tedium from Robert Altman

"3 Women" appears to be a character study of the two leads, played by Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek, as the self-absorbed and socially clueless Duvall trains the naive Spacek on her duties as a senior center aide. But what might have been the tedious details of small-town daily life soon becomes an ominous peek into a warped reality. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and it's impossible to look away.

  • 3 into 1

I am an Altman fan and this Summer I decided to read about him and watch or re-watch a lot of his films. I remember seeing 3 Women when it first came out and I loved it then. The question is would it hold up after 30 years. and the answer is YES. It is a moody piece and it does,'t always make sense. But it isn't supposed to. The idea is to let the imagery grab you. We get identity hints when the Sissy Spacek character steals aspects of Shelley Duvall's character and we are never sure about Janice Rule's character except what we see through her paintings which depict women who are menaced by a man. The film was inspired by dream images, and the movie works that way too. It is abstract, but like all Altman films, fascinating to watch. The ending does bring things together in an ...

  • Treating the Symptoms of Cinephilia

I've long been a fan of Robert Altman and this film in particular. I first saw it with friends in its intitial release and it was a favorite of my now long-deceased best friend. Seeing it again prompted a wave of nostalgia for a time when we driven like junkies to movie theaters, sometimes three or four times a week. When it was released on DVD, I balked at the price, but the Criterion Collection discs are wonderful and full of special features that are actually special. I was planning a movie party almost immediately. And now, I've done my part towards introducing a whole new generation of cinephiles to the pleasures of early Robert Altman. Robert Altman aside, this is a wonderful example of the early work of Sissy Spacek and the incomparable Shelly Duvall. Ms. Duvall's Millie ...

  • intriguing

Spacek and Duvall did excellent performances in a dream-like and disturbing film. The story was uncomfortable enough for me to lower its rating. The soundtrack/music however was superb. Not what we came to expect from Altman, but worth experiencing as one of his early ventures.
