Nice item... took a little fiddling and a factory reset to get it working. HP no longer offers the "standalone" Jetadmin software, but that's on HP. Trying to use the direct console to set a network name yields just a blank screen and there is no easy way to configure the device without it. It comes up fine and works with DHCP, but that can lead to problems when the device restarts and the IP changes. I will keep battling with HP to get a network name set.

  • Jet Direct 300X print server (parallel port only)

Set up was a little challenging with the fixed IP address, since I had never done that before. I had to reset the system to the default setting (hold down the one button and plug power source into the wall plug. hold for a 10-20 seconds). I found the IP address for the server by printing out a printer page while holding down the button again. I had to create a fixed-IP printer port in XP pro and Windows 7. There really was not any specific computer "program" in the process, so it was done manually. Seems to be working okay actually, though both by wireless LAN and wired LAN. Again, parallel port only, supporting an older HP 6P laser printer. I am very satisfied, and the price was right.

  • HP JetDirect 300x External Print Server J3263A

Unless you are familiar with the set-up procedures and terminology associated with print servers, it could be difficult to put the 300X into service. i was fortunate to find on a forum a step-by-step procedure that although it did not apply to the operating system that I was working on, it was close enough to enable me to make the unit functional. After that the unit functioned as expected. It enabled me to utilize a perfectly functional out of date laser printer for use with am equally out of date computer and operating system. Several replies to my inquiry as how to make the unit usable said it couldn't be done. several more said it wasn't worth the effort, and several more suggested giving up and buying a new laser printer. Having accomplished placing the printer and computer in ...

  • HP300X network print server does the job for low price.

Allowed me to keep an old parallel port printer on home network. Purchased to replace a different printer server that had failed after a serious power brown-out. Works as expected and obtained quickly at a low price. Unable to read embedded web pages to configure for my specific network (can access the page but content is not visible). That is likely due to age of product (300X has been around a long time) and I use Linux. Used DHCP Reservation feature of my router to assign a 'fixed' IP address for the near term. Will use an older version of Windows to see if I can see the web page content to configure a real fixed IP address.

  • Just the thing to revive an old laser printer

The HP Laserjet 6p is a great printer. Inexpensive to operate and super reliable. However, it connects to a computer via a parallel printer port and new computers don't have those. Other options are a USB/parallel adapter cable which proved unreliable on my Mac, or a new parallel network print server I bought from D-Link that I couldn't make work with an x-finity cable network. The HP 300x arrived as promised, certainly used but it powered up, reset and connected immediately to my printer and network. Mac found the printer and did the set up almost without intervention. Tip: OSX selects the post script drivers by default. I've never been able to make these work. If you have the same problem use the "generic PCL" drivers; they always work. The other computers on the network, Windows and ...
