      On point

I needed an upgrade from my etrex legend hcx so I chose the 30x. I mainly use for hunting and geocaching and the paperless feature is nice. I took my old one and my new one and collected 5 or 6 geocaches, the accuracy was identical even with glonas. To have the hints and logs at your fingertips was great and the compass kept up faster than my old one. It will take a little time to get used to but I have downloaded free trails and topo maps and it works as expected. Looks like a new one and works like a new one battery life is about the same as my old legend also. The cable to connect is a bit short at like a foot long but I still had my old one and it worked. I am pleased with this unit but other than the paperless geocaching and the sunlight readable screen nothing else really stands out. ...

      GPS Packed with Features

The Garmin eTrex 30x does it's job. Response can be slow at times but eventually it locks in and does the job it is designed for to lock in your location. The best feature is the ability to load your own maps via the Micro SD card holder behind the batteries. There are a lot of features built in so make sure you read the online user guides to make sure you are taking advantage of what this can do as it can be confusing to new users. Always carry a an extra set of batteries as this unit does exhaust the batteries quickly especially if you have backlighting and all of the GPS options turned on. Overall a solid unit for hikers and those needing it for on the spot marine use.

    • Foresters GPS

The Garmin Etrex 30x is ideal for my needs. I am a Timber Cruiser in Oregon so I use the GPS everyday all day. It has all of the features that I need, current technology, electronic compass, I can download waypoint files tracks and poly’s and maps, it accepts SD cards, color screen and it is NOT touchscreen. The unit is rugged and water resistant. All of my equipment gets pretty beat up on the job including my GPS and the Etrex 30 can take it day after day. I would like a little bigger screen sometimes however the fact that it’s small is one of its pro’s.

    • eTrex 30x review

I have two older eTrex devices, but found myself in need of an eTrex that I could more easily download data and upload maps .. so I bought the eTrex 30x. One nice thing is that the USB connection will power the unit during lengthy connections. The unit is quite small and probably should be tethered to the user since I lost it once in a shirt pocket and thought it was gone forever. The color screens help with navigation since types of roads, paths, streams can be quickly recognized as you go. I did find the menus to be a bit confusing at first, but after a few hours practicing, I think they will be fine. I have to admit that I don't like the way the recorded tracks and waypoints are shown on the 30x and think my older eTrex units did a better job.

    • Good basic gps

It is a nice handheld for beginners and avid hikers. Garmin provides paid maps for easy loading for beginners for about $99. If you are computer savvy then get the free ones online, just do a google search. I loaded the whole U.S using a 32gb microsd, I purchased separately, loaded maps for free. Also most of the geocache locations. all this is easily done with garmin’s basecamp software. Accuracy and battery life is good. I also bought a screen protector. For no frills gps and basic, I like it.
