    • I'll take you to MY Leader...

A highly engaging telling of the classic sci-fi formula "Hey, earthlings, we really need to take over your planet because ours is circling the toilet. But hey, don't take it so badly; we have some uber-cool technology to trade you for it, okay?" For 1955, they did a very nice job of special FX, and the storyline, gizmos, monsters and actors actually weren't half bad, IMO. Having Russell Johnson in the cast lineup made it all the better, and quite aptly cast as a scientist, to boot. No doubt for sci-fi film fans, this one was the crown jewel of its day. Alas, it only got to bask in that glory for about a year, as in 1956 "Forbidden Planet" the great-granddaddy of all 1950s sci-fi films came along and blew us all away. • No Bonus Features

In 1996, This Island Earth was edited down and lampooned in the film "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie". The film deserves more respect than that. On it's initial release, in 1955, the film was praised by critics, who cited the special effects, well-written script, and eye-popping color as being its major assets. I first saw the film in a movie theater in the early 1960s and it left a permanent impression on me. The film deserves a proper restoration, whereas this DVD (the only issue I know available) has no bonus features to put the film in a proper perspective of the middle 1950s. Other Universal DVDs of this period usually a general documentary like The Universe According to Universal, a "Making of" Documentary or at least a feature commentary. This Island Earth is just as ...

    • thinking person's sci-fi classic

A classic sci-fi from 1955 and an interesting story as well (it was based on a novel). The special effects are a bit dated, but, you will recognize many of the stars from other roles which always makes it fun to watch. It has a message on several levels, so enjoy the mutant and the action!
