Second belt
This is my second replacement belt from the same company. The original belt that came on the mower lasted about 18 years. The first replacement belt that I’m still using has lasted about 2 years before having a lot of cuts like the original. I bought a second replacement because any day I expect the first replacement belt to break. I don’t totally blame the replacement belt for having so many cuts. I think the problem may be the idler not keeping tension on the belt and letting the belt come off when switching the mower from forward to reverse. I haven’t found a way to easily lubricate or replacement the idler.This is my second replacement belt from the same company. The original belt that came on the mower lasted about 18 years. Junk.......Do not buy it!
This belt is the wrong size....it actually states that in the description, but it also states it is an OEM belt, and therefore we tend to be fooled! The belt is at most 47.5 inches.....the wrong size. The OEM belt is supposed to be a 48 inches. Why does it matter?.....well the MTD variable speed drive is very fussy....a 47.5 inch belt will cause the braking mechanism to fail....making using this belt very dangerous! You can't disengage the forward motion, MTD calls it creep. When the brake is applied the transmission is still engaged, because the belt is still taut, that results in a burning rubber belt and continued forward motion fighting against the brakes. Do not buy this belt......it is useless, the wrong size and your brake will not work because there will be too much tension on ... Fit well.
This is the second time I replaced this belt, it seems to be the correct size, had the exact same numbers on it as the old one. I put it on a Lawn General, (MTD) 1993, 12.5/42in rider mower. My sister helped me with it, we put a very ridged piece of wire through a hole in the side of the frame and hooked the other end into a hole in the idler pulley to pull it back, this made the job much easier than the last time.
