Brought up under Jewish Orthodoxy and Hebrew culture, he consistently opposed the expansion of the borders of Israel from 1967. A fascinating and enlightening look into a culture rarely seen by the outside world.
This book brings an obscure and mystery-shrouded culture into sharp focus. Many aspects of religion have perplexed me for years (decades) and I have spent countless hours trying to "get inside the heads" of people who were seemingly looking at the same information that I was seeing, but arriving at astonishingly different conclusions. The stated objective of the book was to elucidate the differences between interpretations of scriptures by Orthodox Jews and, well, pretty much everyone else. As a man raised in Jewish Orthodoxy, a Holocaust-survivor, and highly respected academic (in the science of Chemistry), Shahak is in a truly unique position to understand Jewish History and Jewish Religion. The book was written in English and meant for an English-speaking audience of Jews and non-Jews ... This book brings an obscure and mystery-shrouded culture into sharp focus. After reading this book, I feel a completely new understanding of not only Jewish Orthodoxy but also of any "Fundamentalist" religion and their relentless compulsion to wield political influence - whether behind the scenes or out in the open. This book will provide almost any reader with an enhanced understanding of all "Western" religions, either directly or indirectly. Very highly recommended.
