"'Brokeback Mountain' does some of the best things a story can do. It abolishes the old West clichés, excavates and honors a certain kind of elusive life, then nearly levels you with the emotional weight at its center."-- Gail Caldwell,The Boston Sunday Globe, "A stand-out story...'Brokeback Mountain' is the sad chronology of a love affair between two men who can't afford to call it that. They know what they're not -- not queer, not gay -- but have no idea what they are." -- Walter Kirn, New York, "'Brokeback Mountain' does some of the best things a story can do. Synopsis
Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, "Brokeback Mountain" is her masterpiece.Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer. Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that's what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.The New Yorkerwon the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of "Brokeback Mountain," and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world's violent intolerance., A stand alone edition of Annie Proulx's beloved story "Brokeback Mountain" (in the collection Close Range )--the basis for the major motion picture directed by Ang Lee, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. • One of the most controvertial books of the century

Both the movie and the book contain a lot of scenic character, both in a good and bad way. Homosexuality is more accepted among people today, but the real problem for the people that get over it is what this story portrays. It's your typical type of love story with lots of nudity involved, but on top of that adultery is taught to be okay as long as no one knows about it…especially the wives. We see this a lot in stories from other countries where there are arranged marriages and people find their true love outside of it. It’s still cheating, but it seems almost better than foregoing a life you chose. That’s the staple of today’s society. If you don't like your house, get a new one. If you don't like your job, get a new one. If you don’t like your wife, get a new one...or get ...

    • Brokeback Mountain, a great read

If you are looking to read a good story, but don't have alot of time, this is definitely the book for you. The love story of two men, who don't identify as being gay or even bisexual. Especially right now, it is good to have a story that explains feelings and what it can be like to hide your true feelings in fear of being beaten up. The movie, although, much longer than the book, follows the text very closely and the roles by Heath Ledger and Jake Gylllenhaal are phenomenal.

    • Brokeback Mountain by E. Annie Proulx (2005)

I liked the book. I loved the movie even better. It might be a love story about two men, but it was well written and believable. I bought the soft back and the hard back book. That shows how much I enjoyed the story. The movie was very exciting to watch. I recommend reading the book and watching the movie.
