About this product

Product Information

Jaycee Dugard's New York Times bestselling memoir chronicles her raw and powerful story of being kidnapped in 1991 and held captive for more than eighteen years. When Jaycee Dugard was eleven years old, she was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. She was missing for more than eighteen years, held captive by Phillip Craig and Nancy Garrido, and gave birth to two daughters during her imprisonment. On August 26, 2009, Garrido showed up for a meeting with his parole officer; he brought Jaycee, her daughters, and his wife Nancy with him. Their unusual behavior raised suspicions and an investigation revealed the tent behind the Garridos' home where Jaycee had been living for nearly two decades. A Stolen Life was written by Jaycee herself and covers the period from the time of her abduction in 1991 up until the present. In her stark, compelling narrative, she opens up about what she experienced--and offers an extraordinary account of courage and resilience.

Reviews
"Dugard's inspirational story…is a firsthand testament to the resilience of the human spirit."- USA Today, "This little memoir...was written plainly and simply by Dugard herself, without the help of a ghostwriter. And in that, it is powerful beyond its voyeurism…reading the experience in her own words is a revelation."- The Washington Post

Overall good, but this book was an old library book, which meant it had a bunch of stickers on it that are extremely difficult to remove.

  • A woman who lost her childhood and 18 years is a survivor and not a victim!

Loved this book! Jaycee was abused her whole life and came out the other side able to smile somehow. She had two children while kidnapped by the man who abducted her. She was allowed th be her daughters sister and not their mother. She was kept in a backyard where people could see her where parole officers came 60 different times and even saw Jaycee (when she was older)and no help ever came. If it was not for Philip (the pedifile) taking Jaycee to the parole office Jaycee and her daughters could posibilly still be in captivity. That is so sad and disturbing that no one was there to help her! Jaycee will continue to do everyday things for herself and her children. Things that she was never allowed to do like make any decision. But she grows and learns everyday. Her book is not ...

  • Heartwrenching, profound story. Inspiring and just amazing.

Oh God. Well, this book is hearwrenching, yet told well by the author in regards to her first-hand experience being kidnapped at age 12 by her captors and rapist...if you don't know the story of Jaycee Dugard, look it up. She is such an intelligent young woman and was an intelligent child. She even recognizes she's in arrested development but at her release, begins therapy (KUDOS to her no-doubt GREAT therapist!) and decided to write it all down. There are many excerpts from her journals and many thoughts both now about then and strictly about then. I don't know her and don't know what life is like for her now, but in the interviews and according to the book, she is accepting and working through everything that has happened to her. She has LOTS of love around her, which is a great ...

  • Inspiring and Illuminating

Jaycee was just a little girl when this horrid human being kidnapped her. Jaycee was brave and strong enough to detail graphic details of what pedophile men do to poor little and defenseless children. He truly stole her life, her self, her true personality. However, she was able to stay strong and overcome her past. What an incredible message for all of those who have been thru traumatic events! We all need to be thankful for the little things we have in life.

  • Amazing little girl that survived...

Jaycee is an amazing little girl forced to grow up in the absolute worst of any conditions imaginable. She was with the worst of the worst two people for so many years... With everything she endured she turned out to be an amazing person and mother. God bless her and her family.
