About this product

Product Information

It's no secret that Harriet the Spy is a timeless classic that kids will love! Every day can be an adventure if you just look carefully enough! Harriet M. Welsch is a spy. In her notebook, she writes down everything she knows about everyone, even her classmates and her best friends. Then Harriet loses track of her notebook, and it ends up in the wrong hands. Before she can stop them, her friends have read the always truthful, sometimes awful things she's written about each of them. Will Harriet find a way to put her life and her friendships back together? "What the novel showed me as a child is that words have the power to hurt, but they can also heal, and that it's much better in the long run to use this power for good than for evil."-- New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot

Reviews
A New York Public Library's 100 Great Children's Books 100 Years selection "This is the book that made me want to be a writer. [Harriet] was the first fictional female character I ever came across who privileged her own truth above the expectations put on her as a little girl."  -- Anna Holmes for Bookish.com "I don't know of a better novel about the costs and rewards of being a truth teller, nor of any book that made more readers of my generation want to become fiction writers. I love the story of Harriet so much I feel as if I lived it." -- Jonathan Franzen , author of Freedom and The Corrections " Harriet the Spy bursts with life."-- School Library Journal "The characterizations are marvelously shrewd."-- The Bulletin

  • Harriet is an old friend

I have read this book literally over 100 times and still get something out of it, even as old as I am now. The book isn't necessarily for everyone (like her second book definitely is not), but it is truly my favorite book of all time. I read my way through five or six copies and I'm not one who treats books shabbily. They just started falling apart from all the reading. I'm glad the original pictures are back in the book (the new one is just wrong). If you've seen the movie, you absolutely MUST read the book, as you will have greater insight into Harriet and her world (and Ole Golly looks NOTHING like Rosie O'Donnell).

  • A classic from childhood full of good memories

This is the original version (1981). I remember reading it when I was young and just laughing my head off. We were actually assigned the book in 3rd grade I think it was for vocabulary reasons, but that did not matter. I would be in my room by myself just cracking up out loud to the point of tears sometimes. Especially the Onion part (perhaps it is the imagination of a child but that one was just the best). I purchased this to share with my daughter who seems to be developing quite a passion for reading, especially together and this seemed like a good choice both for reading readiness and to share something with her from my childhood. Highly recommended.

  • Harriet the Spy: Still a Fun Read Decades Later!

My sister and I read this 50 years ago, and we still enjoy it. The book looked virtually unread, so I was very pleased.
