Moribund performance of great movie music. Pass it up.
I bought John Williams Greatest Hits because it contained most of the Williams numbers I liked from his By Request album he recorded when he had the Boston Pops Orchestra, which was hopelessly scratched and would not play. Frankly, I was disappointed. The numbers are the same, but the performances and the orchestras are not. They are mostly from a later time than By Request. They are also mostly with Williams conducting the London Symphony, though not the recordings he made with London for the movies from which they are taken. They don&apos;t sparkle the way the earlier recordings do. The feel is that Williams was tired when he recorded these, and did not give his best to the work. It is hard to explain the difference. The best I can do is to say the performances on Greatest Hits ... John Williams saved my sanity!
How did this CD save this person's sanity you ask...very simple, it contains the theme song to the Superman movies! My newborn son was VERY FUSSY, but we recognized QUICKLY that he had an EXTREME fondness for the theme song at two weeks of age. Even though we had TIVO'd the movie we knew we needed something for car rides...hence, the purchase of this CD! Believe it or not, he can tell the difference between songs and becomes VERY upset when it's not HIS song playing. Luckily, he falls asleep within two rounds of the song. I have listened to the entire CD many times now and greatly enjoy it. My 5 year enjoys this entire CD also!..so it is really one of the few CD's that can please the whole family!!!! The only bad part about the Superman Theme song is that it gets ... How did this CD save this person's sanity you ask...very simple, it contains the theme song to the Superman movies! Excellent compilation!
I have always loved the music of John Williams and I actually bought this CD many years ago. However, over time, I lost one of the CDs in the set and I just had to replace it. It is a great collector's item and a wonderful addition to any music lover's collection. Highly recommended!
