About this product

Product Information

Gwyneth Paltrow, who won an Oscar for her performance in director John Madden's SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, teams up again with Madden in PROOF, a poignant drama based on David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Paltrow lights up the screen as Catherine, a young woman who has given up a seemingly bright future in order to take care of her ailing father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins), a formerly brilliant mathematician who went crazy. After he dies, Catherine's closed-off world is invaded by Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young mathematician who worshipped Robert, and Claire (Hope Davis), her successful sister who fears that Catherine is too much like their father--a talented, supremely intelligent person with severe mental problems. During the last years of his life, Robert filled 103 notebooks with his writings, but one of them, written during a brief period of lucidity, could turn the math world on its head, while also threatening Catherine's already wavering sanity. Auburn co-wrote the screenplay with Rebecca Miller (PERSONAL VELOCITY, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE), taking it off the stage, setting it in and around Chicago, and breathing new life into the story, along with Stephen Warbeck's compelling score and plenty of outstanding acting, particularly by the glowing Paltrow and the earnest Gyllenhaal.

  • PROOF WIDE-SCREEN

There are so much to admire in John Madden directed `Proof' - Gwyneth Paltrow's acting for example - but there are also many flaws in it, the worst being its stagy and talky nature of the film. At first `Proof' unfolds like a mystery. As many say on the net, the film is based on the critically acclaimed play (which I have not seen). It is about Catherine (Paltrow) and her recently deceased father Robert (Anthony Hopkins). Robert was a genius of mathematics, but his last days, as is suggested in flashbacks, were troubled ones. Now one interesting thing happens after his death. Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), former student of Robert, finds a notebook, which might or might not contain a brilliant finding of mathematics. Of course, we need a proof as to the authenticity of the writing. But ...

  • Haven't seen a film this stunning since "Crash"

A brilliant movie. True, the story doesn't travel in the way most predictable Hollywood films often do. In the end, you are almost left with more questions than answers (thus, my comparison to the Academy Award winning "Crash"). But the beauty of it is in the confusion--that's the great joke! The entire revolves around "needing to have PROOF" of something: emotional well-being, mathmatical genius, love, hate, brilliance, and more. The great statement being made in the film's lack of a firm conclusion is exactly the final 'jab' at the concept. It leaves you hanging IN ORDER TO say, "Hey, proof is sometimes overrated. Sometimes you just have to BE and let others interpret that as they choose." Because unlike math, life (and especially relationships) can't always be measured, ...

  • Difficult

I watched the movie and can sort of relate it the "a beautiful mind" in the sense it about a "crazy mathmetician" but the storylines are nothing alike. this movie is about a deceased father and a notebook found while cleaning up.... did the father write it? or did the daughter who was taking care of him write it? .... i felt like the movie didnt really close, it went back and fourth in time a lot and that bothered me .... i feel like you really have to pay close attention to come to any conclusion about this movie and yet you still dont feel like there is a moral, no closing, whatever happend to the book? is it published? whos name did it get published under? ....i like a movie to have a closing, have something happen. i dont feel like anything happend in this movie, it was like a notebook ...

  • Must see Very Interesting

The acting was brilliant. The plot a bit heavy for non mathematicians, but it is very definitely worth watching. Hopkins is great as always. The wondering of inheriting parents bad genes as well as the good ones continues in eternity. Am I crazy? Who is to say? Very moving moments, great thought provoking mixed with a little love story. Wow, watch it. The only bad part was, it was not long enough for me.

  • Proof Paltrow and Hopkins are Awesome in this Movie

Seeing Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal work together in this awesome movie was very inspiring. Jake has been in so many movies recently and with so many talented actors and actresses. Gwyneth Paltrow peforms very well in this challenging movie, which by the way, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play! You just cannot find enough words to describe Anthony Hopkins and his terrific portrayal of this mathematical genius. Keep your eyes and heart open when you watch this movie and own today!
